I don't have the knowledge to judge this coin ... but it appears that our experts are convinced that someone was fleeced. Ouch. David

That's sickening but folks this isn't just ebay. Local auctions you can see this too where people have a lot of EMOTION and several CENTS along with their DOLLARS but not enough SENSE. Example: I recently saw a 1969 Proof set bring not $20 or $40 but $90.00 and there was a 10% buyers premium on top of that. There were quite a bit of coins at this auction but most of the stuff was common silver dollars and modern USA coins (post 1933). What made it worse was the amount of jewelry. That brought in a lot of people that did not know what coins were worth. The auctioneer did not have trouble getting bids.

Put it this way: It's front-page news when a real one reaches the market at all. It's a signature acquisition for the most well-heeled of collectors, or a museum. No price guideline is possible for something this rare.

Thanks SsuperDdave for the answer.
Well, we don't know about the bidders, if they knew about the coin, buy maybe $1K is a fair price for a very well done replica.

Not sure about Canada, but the price for a "well-done replica" in the US is a jail cell.

The person actually paid for it! I checked the feeddback of the seller... geez, no way it is real. That person is going to be upset down the road

SsuperDdave: Is it illegal in USA to make a replica of a let's say 1700 foreign coin?

Not positive, but I think the only thing prohibited under US statute involves the dies/mold/etc. used for foreign coinage. So did anyone here ever contact the seller regarding this coin?

Remember, if something goes like this, the buyer and the person who also bid it up are both clueless. You can only get a high bid after starting lower if two people force it up. Of course, each might assume the other knows the value.
