i have both proof and mint sets from 1951 to present the 1951 is pcgs graded. they can get rather expensive pre 1955 but can still pick up the 60 thru 64 silver proofs averaging 12. a set at any coin show or local dealers with the exception of the 60 small date. 57 thru 59 are obtainable at low cost also for the proofs. I pick up as many as I can afford 20 at the recent baltimore show and put them away fot the grandkids. I think they are a gooid investment.

I buy 3 of each set every year break one of each open to fill my books with the P.D S. I don't do the silver but only because I don't see a need for them in my books.

I am on the subscription list for 2 of each (Proof, Mint, and Silver). That way they just send them to me every year and I don't have to worry about them selling out to fast or forgetting. Like Gary, I break one set open for my Dansco Album and keep one set in OGP

I collect them randomly, depends if I like them. When I do buy them, I tend to get the silver ones. Tpatna, where can I get on the list so that the mint can send them to me, because I always forget, or I'm too late.

I have tons of them....too many in fact, I've been selling them.

The sad fact is they just don't appreciate like they should. In fact, I have MANY sets that sell today for less than they were purchased for. ARRRGGGGG People seem to be practically giving them away on ebay and elsewhere.

The flip side, for collectors, they are fun to own, look at and show people. IMO, Gary has the right idea, just open those suckers and put 'em in your books. You might as well because you're better off with your money in a high-yield savings account if you're buying as an investment.

Well I have a small set. 1999 mint set, and then 2001 - 2007 silver proof. Think I'm missing one year in the series. Working to buy other sets as money allows.

All from 1952 to present and a few prior to that. Every year I order anywhere from 10 to 15 of each proof, uncirc sets. I use them for Christmas Presents. If people have moved, lost contact, died, etc and they are no longer available for such presents, I just keep the extras. I occationally order the prestige sets but stopped that since they take up to much room. Not long ago I gave away about half of the ones I had amassed due to lack of room. Made great presents for birthdays, weddings, etc. Still way to many.
I also break open some for coins to put in sets. This year I plan on ordering at least 15 of each.

I like all the modern sets but my favorites are the mint sets. Almost every one of the best coins the mint makes each year goes into these sets. Really nice coins can still be hard to find in the sets but compared to looking in circulation it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

I like the silver proof sets. I started by trying to assemble a set from 1999- date for the State Quarters. Stumbled upon some of the earlier years before 1999 for a good price, so that extended it a little and am trying to get any that I do not have and can afford when the moment arises. Proof, Mint or Silver Proof all have a collector base, so it is pretty much , buy what you like.

I'm close to my goal for proof sets of owning 1 from every year 1955 to present. I still need to pick up sets from 1960, 1961, 1975, and 1988. From 1999 and on I've got and will continue to buy the silver sets.
