I was looking in my Dansco Presidential dollar Album and noticed that Grover Cleveland has 2 spots in 2012. By 2 spots I don't mean P & D but rather he will be on 2 different Presidential dollars.

My question to you is: When the first coin is released would you buy 2 p's and 2'd and put on in each slot, or would the U.S. Mint redesign the Grover Cleveland dollar coin for the second term he served in office.

If you check the mint's release schedule you'll see they are releasing two different coins with Grover since he served two non-consecutive presidencies. My guess is that it will be the same design, just with different dates.

That would just be pure laziness on the Mint's part if the two GC coins were identical except for dates served as President. The second coin should at least have a slightly different portrait design, otherwise IMO he deserves just one coin because there is no sense in have two virtually identical coins.

odd ... I'll have to check this out tonight when I get home ... I think if a president served two terms, the date could just say 2000 - 2008, for example, instead of two coins ...

Biokemi - If you feel so strongly about it, then write the Mint, the Treasuer, your Representative and your Senators. Make your voice heard.

I don't think it's laziness at all. I like the idea for consistency. Just change the date range. By 2012, these will only be sold in rolls to collectors from the Mint like the Sacs are now so it's really no biggie. If the series even makes it to 2012. That's 5 long years and 18 coins away.

Do they try to make the president look vaguely the age he was when in office?

They could put a few more gray hairs in his beard, and make him a little more bald.

I read somewhere that they were doing different designs...I'll look to see if I can find where I read that.

As stated above, Grover Cleveland is the only president to serve non consecutive terms, thus making him the 22nd and 24th president.

Teddy Roosevelt ran in 1912 but lost to Woodrow Wilson, otherwise TR would have been the second president to serve non consecutive terms.

I don't think there were any other unsuccessful bids by former presidents.

Regarding the two coins for Grover Cleveland, you don't suppose the mint had a profit motive?

Grover Cleveland was the first President married in office, his new wife was only 21 years old and he was 49 years old when they were married.

She was actually a pretty attractive lady for her time, hopefully her likeness on the 1/2 oz gold will be nice.

I believe the mint felt it was appropriate to issue two dollars since Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president.

It's in the law passed that he gets two coins, it was Congress that made the descion, not the mint. :)
