It sure looks cleaned. Impossible to say how rough a cleaning with low res. pictures. Personally, I would pass unless there is an unconditional return policy and felt lucky.

I'd love to know how you guys can pick a cleaned coin from photos like that. What is it you are seeing?

Even in these tiny images, one can clearly see the huge contrast between unnaturally-bright fields and the dark crud surrounding the devices, particularly the ugliness embedded in the date. The buyer will find this one to have been brushed hard (Brillo territory).

But the bright evenness of the "clean" areas is the real hair-raiser. You never want to see an obviously-circulated coin with that look.

So if someone were to carefully clean a coin so that detritus wasn't obvious around devices like stars and letters and numbers it wouldn't be so obvious? For me it is quite difficult to tell. I know that you often can tell microscopically but most of us don't have access to a microscope when looking at purchasing a coin, especially off the internet.
Thanks for the reply SsuperDdave

No, not really. The color/finish of the coin presented above, with or without gunk around the devices, is plainly wrong to an experienced collector. An honest circulated Morgan just doesn't look like that. Once the number of Classic coins you've looked at numbers in the thousands, it will be equally obvious to you.

Well the coin is listed for $115... I doubt he'll even respond if I message him an offer under $70.

$115 doesn't sound like too bad a price. The detail is close to XF and a problem-free piece would run over $150 and probably $200. If you need that date for an album then I'd offer $100.

I agree with a VF35 grade but cleaned so that in mind - would bring the value down at least 30-50%. $115 is probably a fair price considering the cleaning, which could be harsh I can't really tell from the small photo.

I'd buy every 1892-S I could get for $30, even if it was run over by a train and then shot from a cannon. But I'll never see one at that price, so it doesn't matter.

Actually, it's not too far out of the question - an NGC F12 went for $37 at Heritage last month.
