Definitely Byzantine. My guess would be Justinian.

Was it laying on top of the soil?

Give your son a trowel and tell him to dig carefully. You never know, there could be more.

Good excuse to buy a metal detector.

Excellent find. What country was this found in? It's a very nice example of Justinian I from the Antioch mint (Syria). While not rare in this condition is has some value.

The hilarious thing is he got a metal detector for Christmas and just found this with his eyes. We didn't even think about going back out there with that. Guess we will have to do that tomorrow.. Very weird that it was found in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. The houses in the neighborhood were all built in the 1970's. Maybe some kid years ago berried it like a treasure and forgot about it? last week we had a lot of rain, and when that happens it looks like a creek is running through our backyard. I'm sure that's how it found its way down to our yard?

I found similar coins online, but have yet to find a match. Thank you for your help. My Son wants to put his baseball card collection on hold now, and venture to a coin shop soon!! I sense a new hobby is born. lol

That is odd, more than likely someone dropped it or like you said a kid buried it. It would be very strange to find this coin in the ground of the US otherwise.

Once upon a time ancient coins like these later Byzantines were ridiculously inexpensive. Someone may have actually had it in pocket as a good luck piece and simply managed to loose it.
Either way ..... I would whip out a metal detector if I found one laying about !

OK, but the fun explanation is that we finally have the proof we need that the Greeks founded Atlantasopolis 1400 years ago.

Wildwinds.com is a good site for helping identify ancient coins. It's Byzantine for sure, probably Justinian but I am not certain.

The coin was minted in Antioch, which had at that time been renamed "Theopolis". The mintmark is "ThUPO" in Greek letters, a one-year-type issued only in the 13th year (ANNO XIII) of the reign of Justinian I (AD 539-540). You can see a similar coin about a quarter of the way down on this page.

As to how a Byzantine coin might have gotten half-buried in an American backyard, one can but guess. It might have been part of a stolen coin collection; when the thieves found out the coins were not spendable, they simply dumped them. Or someone might have thought it was fake, and thrown it away in disgust.
