Finn235,
I agree with the '38 and '58. 1958 suffered a recession and the mintage reflected the lack of demand.
The last buffalo was minted in 1938.
Both reflect the scarcity of finding these two, Philadelphia dates easily.

I started out keeping every nickel 1959 back to 1938,But it started to take up too much space.

Pre 60 nickels seem to be the average on this forum besides errors, 2009's, and the westward journey nickels. I haven't really started CRH nickels yet but I keep all of them from my change. The one's I mentioned earlier go into my coin box and the rest into a mason jar which is just about full. I'm thinking once I fill it up I'm going to buy some silver coins with them.

Here's what we keep:

1. Liberty nickels
2. Buffalo nickels
3. Silver nickels
4. Any other nickel under 15 million mintage
5. The 1938p, which is not under 15 million mintage, but my son likes to keep them.

I do what Finn235 does: keeping a book and upgrading along the way. That being said, I still probably have about 20 rolls of low-grade 40s and early 50s. My son and I use the blue Whitman folders for those we find CRH. War Nickels are always fun to find.

It seems no one remembed to mention the S mint marks from proof sets...

What--Nickels-Should-I-Keep

As far as I remember anything dated 1971 or after with an S mint mark is from a proof set.

I found this one a while back, it's still got some of it's mirror finish.

Edit: spelling

Is there any reason to keep the 1982 or 1983 P & D? Or the 1984 P or 1986 D?

If you need them for a book or folder. Really depends on why you are collecting coins.

Why not keep at least one of each and do a complete set. You can upgrade the coins when you find better examples. The examples already given are good to keep duplicates of.

That's a great idea! I went through the ones I had last night and purged the lower quality ones and stored the better looking ones. Oh, and ordered my first coins folders/albums too!

Agrippa: the 1983 P&D are actually worth keeping if you find one in BU with full steps. The Mint did not release mint sets that year, so high-grade coins from circulation carry a steep premium over neighboring years. Keep in mind that this is ONLY for coins with a strong strike (full steps) in MS 65 or better.

Also, coins from 1971-1980 are becoming increasingly hard to nab from circulation in BU grades. Now is probably the time to start keeping those if you ever want a 1938-2003 set from circulation.

Solid advise given so far ... I agree with what has been said.

My personal roll-found collection is stored in two ways ...

Humble blue Whitman folder 9009 for the series 1938 - 1961.

My coins from 1962 to date are housed in a Dansco 7113 album.

Hopeful that you enjoy the roll search for nickels ... IMHO the only currently circulating series over 70 years old that one can reasonably expect to complete through bank rolls.
