I don't see a cleaning there, I see an AU55. A nice coin, and somebody got a nice deal at $115.

Altered surfaces on the obverse of that dime, at the least, imho. Luster doesn't look quite natural.

I am not sure what the one poster is seeing to call obverse altered surfaces of that Half Dime. I see some hits on it and that might hold back from being designated as truly problem free. It's a little funky at S11 I think you got a fair price on that quarter and it represents a great bargain for someone who collects for appointment detail versus originality. I've enlarged the auction photo to look at the S11 position. I wonder if the black mark is a bit of toning. I'll know in a few days when I get the coin.
It does appear to have at least two marks on the obverse, but other than that it looks like a nice coin and a type I don't have in my collection.

It is my opinion it has been cleaned but not brushed. My guess is that it was dipped and then put in distilled water and went through a freeze thaw and repeat process...just my opinion. On the somewhat bright side I do believe over time it may continue a normal life cycle...

I received the 1838 Seated Liberty half dime today and was disappointed to discover that it has scratches all over Miss Liberty, scratches that weren't visible in the auction photos. This one's going back. Paul Bulgerin

I'm only out a few bucks postage.
I even enlarged the auction photo, but none of the scratches were visible on it.

They are well hidden by poor lighting. However, brightening the image and then inverting the colors will show you some of the issues with the coin. Additionally, most of the other seated material he sold at the same time have issues. I would have never touched it.
At least you can return it. :)
