1. G6, details 2. VG10, details 3. VG10 4. G6 5. G6 6. VG8 7. G6 8. VF20 9. VF20 10. F15 11. G6 12. VF20 13. VF30 14. VF35
Based on the other guesses, I'm either really conservative or horribly lost..

I must be a hard grader because I don't see an AU in the bunch. although 13 comes close...

TPG grade/my grade. 1. VG-8/G-6 2. F-15/F-12 3.F-12/fF-12 4. G-6/G-4 5. G-6/G-6 6. F-12/F-12 7. VG-10/VG8 8. EF-40/EF -40 9. EF-45/EF-45 10. VF -35/VF-30 11. VG-8/VG-8 12. EF-40/EF -40 13. AU-53/AU-53 14. EF-45/EF-45 I believe #13 gets an AU because I'm seeing the weakness in the ribbon as strike related. To me, it really depends heavily which TPG we are up against.

Quote: I've had (non key date) coins come back, with less damage on them than the ones I labeled as detailed Yeah--that would sure be frustrating! A few of these struck me as details-grade as well--I like coins with even wear. So I picked coins w/pictures detailed enough to grade--I didn't single out problem coins. That said, some probably look different in-hand--at lot of my IHCs do! Overall, I trust my fellow CCF members grades more than many as slabbed--especially #8 with the CAC sticker! I've posted the TPGs grades next to the coins. Here are my grades. I gave a few net grades due to issues I see. 1. VG8--too many marks! 2. F12 details--big scratch 3. F15 4. AG3 Just not enough rim/legends to make G4 5. G4 6. F15 7. F12 toughie to grade 8. EF40 not enough detail in ribbon curls for AU--scratches on cheek. 9. VF35 10. VF25 11. VG8 just barely 12. EF45 probably better in-hand 13. EF45 held back by strike 14. EF45

DV, thank you again! This is one of the best post for learning about grading. You provided the pics and Rick Snow's grading guide then, you gave the TPG grade. I just downloaded his printout last week. I'm still learning, ( I'm to embarrassed to post) and did not but did it at home. This is great you did this. A learning experience.

This was a great exercise! Not at all surprised that my grading was below the TPG's. PCGS should be embarrassed by #2....imo.

And I really don't understand the CAC sticker on #8 "AU58" Wear/strike/scratches--I just don't see it.

I didn't get my grades in before the results were posted, but when I compared mine to the TPG's, their grades were higher on 12 of the 14 coins (some considerably higher) and the same for other 2. I don't consider myself an expert grader, but I do follow Snow's guide and I am usually in the ballpark when IHC & FE are posted in the grading forum. This grading exercise was an eye opener for me.

Yeah--this exercise was an eye-opener to me too--keeps me on my toes. Quote: You provided the pics and Rick Snow's grading guide then, you gave the TPG grade. Grading should be straightforward; I tried to keep this as objective as possible.

Well that was sure interesting, take away my details grades I didn't do too badly, the Goods I went a touch higher as TPG's tend to go on the key dates. I was really torn on the one I called MS as I thought maybe, just maybe it might make it due to luster less the hits and ticks, not even close there! Thanks for this little reality check! Shows how varied even the TPGs can be. Are most of these in newer holders?

Quote: Shows how varied even the TPGs can be. Are most of these in newer holders? Yeah--it was a good reality-check for me too. I pulled these 'off-the-top' from Heritage. Mostly newer auctions/holders because the pictures are larger and better.

I'm blown away on #8 and #1. #8 has clear wear on ribbon, hair above ear and below ribbon. I guess they liked the strike on the feathers? On the bright side, my 1877 IHC will now definitely be sent in for grading. According to the old ANA book I used back in the day I graded mine VG. Using these standards I might get VF.

F-12, maybe F-15. I don't see it going to VF, but who knows after seeing the results of the grading game.

By my grading standards, that one is at least F12
