Hum I might be nuts but it looks like the "D" was removed.

If the D was removed it doesn't explain how the rest of the obverse has all the die 2 characteristics. If it was originally a 22-D, the rest of the obverse would look like a 22-D also.

It's very possible, and it doesn't make sense that a 50K coin sitting around ungraded. If this coin is real it's worth every bit of it. I compared this one with an MS65 on Heritage and it's just as good. I can't afford it anyway, but would be curious to know if seller would guarantee it. I think ebay buyer protection is 30 days.

Odd that the seller will not pay a few dollars to have that graded and authenticated. That alone would bet him a lot more money.

Well I'm sticking that the "D" was removed. Plus his picture has all the light on the top of the coin and dark at the bottom.

For all intent and purpose ANY high grade rare coin on ebay, that's not in a TPG holder, is not in a holder for a reason! 99 times out of 100 it's because the Seller already knows it won't slab because it's been "played with" --- cleaned, altered, whizzed or out and out counterfeit. Why buy somebody elses problem?

I really appreciate all the replies. Would definitely be a gamble at best. Lucky winner (toungue-in-cheek) would have to immediately send it to PCGS for an EXPRESS grade.
yingyang, I'm glad you replied. I got a lot out of your thread on fakes.

If you, or anyone else, is seriously considering this coin I would first contact the Seller and ask for an extended return period (90 days at a minimum). Let the Seller know you would be more comfortable having the coin certified. If the Seller refuses the extended return then YOU better run away as fast as you can.

Good suggestion. Even if the coin might be a bit too rich for me, it's a good question to ask anyway. We're talking about getting a clean grade here right? Not really interested in a "details" coin.

Before spending big bucks know what your options are going to be. Nothing like getting burned with a "bad" coin that you can't return because you blew past the return period waiting for it to come back from the TPG service. Bad coin is any coin that turns out to be not exactly what the Seller claimed it to be.

I sent the seller a message asking for an extension on the return policy so I could get it graded......a clean, no "details" grade.
edit: western...I tried to PM you, but you must not be receiving emails at this time.

I researched the coin for many hours comparing this one to Heritage auction archives. After comparing the normal die 2 characteristics, I took it down to individual letters like the "D" in God, and the "E" in We, and others. I became convinced the coin is genuine. Now the problem is what will it grade and is it 'details.' I don't think it will grade any lower than AU55. Even if it gets a 'cleaned' details, would still probably sell for more than 2K. The seller already told me he would extend his return policy so that I could send it out and make sure it graded cleanly. Have already got the PCGS form almost filled out. The auction was exciting. I was practically obsessed for a week and my heart was pounding. It sat at $885 until 5 seconds before hammer, and I put in my max bid of $1500....was fortunate to get it. Was wondering if I shouldn't get it holdered if it was 'genuine,' and possibly return it, but since I feel I got it for a pretty decent price, will probably keep the slab. BTW, Heritage is an awesome site, and the software is top notch. Just wanted to share my excitement with the forum. Frankly, you guys and gals get a lot of the credit. Any thoughts on my next step sending it to PCGS? Have never sent a coin to PCGS before. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ed
