MS63 From these photos, I do not see enough cartwheel under the toning to have it make 64 or higher. I do not profess to know the series as most of you but from a standpoint of discerning a point or two in grade based on mint luster and toning holding it back, I cannot see more than MS63.
nonetheless, sweet coin for the 7070. nice pick up

Oh man, nice coin! I look forward to seeing what PCGS gave it. I was thinking high AU because I thought I saw friction on the knee but after reading everyone's response I realize I am probably just seeing things. Still need to learn how to grade these.

At first glance I was thinking AU-58, but when I stopped and really looked at it I don't see wear... MS-63 imo.

Thanks for the grades!! This coin got NO love from PCGS ...But it presented a nice buying opportunity for me!! I think the toning is attractive, and as you can see, there are absolutely NO noticeable marks on the coin...not even noticeable luster breaks. I do think I understand where PCGS is coming from, as the coin has a slight glossiness to the surfaces when viewed at a certain angle that is a bit unnatural looking....but does not detract from the overall beauty of this incredibly preserved SLQ!

I'm not sure how I feel about cracking coins out of PCGS cases, just because of respect towards the grader. Though the grader wouldn't care because he's already been paid and graded plenty more, it would feel like a waste of his time and someone's money... Just my opinion. Beautiful coin, though!

Heck in a holder like that I'd crack it out too...but before I saw the Details grade it was making my stomach turn...LOL. I know a lot of folks don't really care too much if the coins are left in their holders, that is to say they maybe they have enough confidence in their own grading skillz that they don't need the opinion of a TPG to validate what they know, but to me on these older coins, if I have a top name TPG holder which says that the coin is an MS grade, it seems to me that the opinion by a TPG, regardless of leniency or agreement in how they grade, still counts toward a professional in the business looking at the coin and seeing it good enough for that grade. Just my opinion though... NICE NICE SLQ! That would go great in my 7070 BTW Is there any way to tell here how they came to the conclusion of it being cleaned? Is it something about the toning or the dark spots on the eagles wings?

I'm thinking MS-64... but I don't see the cleaning.

None of us picked up on the 'details cleaning'. Perhaps that is a result of the lighting used for the image?

John, I also cherry pick these new PCGS details slabs.
There are some nice buying opportunities there :-)

I would have never thought that coin was cleaned, nice natural looking patina actually. I would have guessed 64, but who cares, great coin for the book

vermontensium has a very commendable strategy with slabs details like this one!

I'm not sure what the initial photos did but not one of us saw that coming and based on the detailed close ups of the coin, I would love to sit and talk with the graders working that shift and get an idea what they saw Quote: I'm not sure how I feel about cracking coins out of PCGS cases, just because of respect towards the grader. Though the grader wouldn't care because he's already been paid and graded plenty more, it would feel like a waste of his time and someone's money Graders are not holy men and graders are often as inaccurate as they are accurate. On any given day the same coin could get varying grades dependent upon a lot of factors.

Yeah, the "cleaning" is very subtle, and really hard to depict in a picture. This coin could easily pass for problem free to an average collector, and I probably wouldn't have noticed the cleaning had the PCGS label told me so; and I also had several Mint State SLQs in which to compare it to. It has a slight unnatural look to it when viewed from the side without direct light, and has a bit of "glossiness" that doesn't show on my other MS problem free slqs. Has the coin been cleaned? probably....but I still think PCGS could just as easily call it problem free.
Yes Dave, there are a LOT of great coins in 'detail" slabs, and I actually hunt them too....not only because they can represent a great value, but also because I crack out the majority of the coins that I own to put into albums; and I feel a LOT more comfortable cracking out a coin from a details slab.

No disrespect to the grader but it is subjective. Recently I saw a 1956 mint set sent in in original packaging come back from ngc with the quarter obverse cleaned. For those that don't know two graders look at the coin only if they don't agree a third looks at it and the majority wins. Could be just like here split. I think a great buying opportunity for you but if I were the seller I would have sent it back in. I have seen occasions where they changed their opinion. Especially if it's 5 years or more since grading. I give more credit to pcgs just because of the sloppy job they do at ngc. Mismarked labels are about 10 to 1 which makes me wonder about the workload at Ngc. Like anything else you get better results if the employee is able to take the time nessesary to be accurate. When I see the the number of mistakes getting past ngc's quality controll it tells me their being rushed.
