If it were me, I would keep the 1850. I really like your bullion stacking style for your dad.

Quote: That 1866-s is HARSHLY cleaned, looks like with a wire brush, or maybe whizzed like crazy....so you do not want that one. I really like the 1850, lots of detail and eye appeal...and being somewhat of a key date; I would go with that one. Johnny you must have posted while I was typing. I agree on the 1866 S. The 1850 and the 1872 ... to me are very close in eye appeal. 1850 mintage 1,170,261 numismedia VF $2500.00 XF $3560.00 AU50 $5400.00 1872 mintage 251,850 numismedia F $2280.00 VF $2310 XF $2370 AU50 $2500.00 Quote: If it were me, I would keep the 1850. I have been buying a lot of coins like these for about 3 years now .. my dad seems to like it too .. he keeps asking for more.

The '50 gets my vote based on eye appeal plus the fact that it's the gold rush era. But, the '04 is the best looking. It would be tough to pick between the two.

One other thing .... whichever one I choose.
My 82 year old father will have the others.

The 1850 looks the best in my opinion.

The 1850, first real year of the double eagle. I actually saw the 1849 in 1973 when I was in Washington DC.

I'm with the 1850.
@Dave, That's why you save up for one. My Gold coin is a Quarter Eagle.

Put me down for the 50. Definitely the better looking coin IMO.

The 1904 is just about the most common Liberty double eagle and has a bullion-related price until you get to high MS grades. The 1850 is the clear choice here based on value alone, although the eye appeal is also pretty good. There are a lot of small marks but nothing that rises to the level of an obvious problem. It has AU detail with good luster. I wonder if the hairline scratches especially on the reverse might cause it to be flagged as cleaned by a grading service. I would have it graded if it were mine, to establish whether it qualifies as "no problem" and to certify authenticity.
Hey, if it grades no-problem AU-50 you can sell it and buy two 1904 coins in at least MS-63!

After taking the double eagles to the main store, to get more eyes on them.
With better light and a 10X glass, I can see that all three, the 1850, 1866S and the 1872 have a lot of cleaning lines.
So not sure how much the cleaning would drag down the value of these coins.

Maybe you should've gotten your father a Saint Gaudens $20!
