Thanks folks. I to got interested in War Nickels because of my dad. He landed in France a few days after D-Day and spent 28 months walking around France, Germany and Belgium carrying a 60 pound mortar. he got wounded but survived and now lives with my wife and I. (pic below is a tribute to him and my mom, previously posted). I got three or four of the coins in ten coin lots for $230-240 each. the rest were picked up individually on the bay and elsewhere. I would have to go back and search my records for costs but most were between $26-32. All were fairly easy except the 44 and 45P. The idea of a FS set would be fun, but they get a little costly. I have five more War Nickel sets in various states of completion (most needing the 44 and 45P), so I may finish those to sale and finance the FS set although I have never been able to sell a coin. Anyway, thanks for looking and your comments.

I love the shadow box presentation. I also made one for my father, who was one of the original members of Merrill's Marauders.

That shadow box is amazing! I'm truly moved by the overall presentation and the incorporation of the things you cherish being commemorated in such a great fashion. Truly awesome!

The Western Union telegram in the box is from the Sec of the Army telling my grandmother that her son had been wounded. The "irradiated" dime is from the museum at Oak Ridge Tennessee. While dad was overseas, mom worked on "the bomb" at Oak Ridge. Obviously she did not know what she was working on and could only go in the one building where she worked on the compound and of course the women's dorm. Fun story.

mainer-Merrill's Marauders-I had not heard of that but have read about them after your post. I did a google search and wonder if any of the pics I found are of your dad.

jprine - I'll have to do a google search myself and look at some. If you are interested in reading about them, I would recommend Spearhead by James E.T. Hopkins. It's a complete history of Merrill's Marauder Rangers.

What a great way to honor your Dad jprine. Seriously cool. My Grandpa was in the 243rd artillery, battery B. He too landed a few days after DDay and was ushered forward to his company, in 1945 he was moved to the Big Red 1 and stayed in Germany until 1947. I'd love to put something together like what you did for him.
As for the sets, wow! Congrats!

Great looking collection and all PCGS. I'm actually working on an MS66 set and won't be paying attention to the steps. My reason is the same- a couple of the full-step date/MM combinations get pricey. The challenge I am having is that even at MS66, so many coins have uneven toning and spotting. I went into this hoping that at MS66, white examples without surface disturbances (aside from nicks) would be reasonably available. ebay obviously is a great source of material, however the photos invariably don't tell the entire story. I have been emailing sellers regarding condition of their MS66 coins and frankly I've gotten many dismissive and curt answers. I may have to acquire examples live though I have only ever attended one coin show. Am I being unrealistic in attempting a "white" MS66 set of the War Nickels?
