You didn't say if you were looking for Unc or Circulated ones. A cir BTW has a great looking map of the USA on the rev and is a great looking coin at a very low cost.

Go with the classics 1893 Columbian, 1925 Stone Mountain, 1946-51 Booker T. Washington, 1951-54 Washington Carver.

1892 Columbian half, Stone mountain, Booker T. Washington, Washington Carver, and I strongly recommend the Oregon Trail. It has a great design and all, but nicer Unc grades tend to go for couple hundred dollars. But it's a design that looks awesome even if circulated--which doesn't cost all that much. :)

I have both 1982 Washington Half Dollars (proof and uncirculated), occupying two of the four holes.

An 1893 Columbian Expo occupies another.

The fourth is open, waiting for me to make a decision. It will probably be a classic (silver).

I have the 1986 Statue of Liberty one myself, in a set with the 1986 Silver dollar, it's a nice set.

for a hole filler and a CHEAP half... why not a bi-centennial, it only costs 50 cents

Edit and it IS a commemorative

I think matteproof covered it. Those are all great commems at very reasonable prices.

I agree with IndianGoldEagle, they are most most economical "Classic" Commemorative Halves.

While not silver, the Baseball HOF commems are still on sale from the US Mint for under $25.

for the other modern I would pick one of the Washington silver half dollars and for the two classics on the cheap Columbian Expo and G.W.Carver/B.T.Washington

Difficult choices to make indeed if your budget demands 'cheap' coins ...

Consider your set years from now when you have upgraded certain coins and are near completion ...

I humbly suggest slowing down and saving enough now to purchase the classic silver commemorative half dollars that mean the most to you ... coins that you would enjoy seeing every time you opened that album.

There are 50 classic silver type coins ... each one unique in the celebration of the event of the day ...

Choose two that speak to you and appeal to your collecting spirit ... then proceed with budgeting accordingly.

I could offer suggestion on specific coins ... but it is your aesthetic that matters.

Best of wishes with your choices ... I am sure they will be a winner for you.

David,

The reason I do not want to spend too much money on these coins are
A) I am a YN and I do not have a huge budget to work with to start with
and B) I would rather spend the money on other coins for other parts of the set

2 classic and 2 modern, but make the 2 modern the only 90% moderns: George Washington and Bill of Rights. Both are very affordable -- less than $20 easy.

The 1892 or 1893 Columbian is a great choice because it's the first and it's very affordable. For the last slot, there may be something from the series that speaks to you (commemorative from your home state, perhaps). I think the San Diego is the best compromise of cost and excellent design.

I was at the bank today and got 8 half dollars and one was the 1976-d Comm. for .50 cents. I do have a 46 Iowa Comm. from my mother she got when they were sold new and the 93 Colombian from my grandma that she got new. Family history to pass on to my grandson, hopefully not to soon.
