I did get insurance but when asked how much the extra insurance was I declined as £250 was a waste of time when package is worth 600 pounds......went to post office and the postmaster said, in a jolly voice.....you are not having much luck today! I could have screamed! Total insurance for AirSure tracked and signed for £50! I cannot even see me bothering to claim.

Yea UK based but doesn't hold much gravitas internationally..........also, why would a thief steal the submission form too? Don't suppose there is any hope....

Some may actually want the coins out of the slab so they can check them more closely. I can understand sending US coins to the US for grading but for coins that will be worth more in the UK? I have half considered sending coins to the US for grading but sending coins from mainland Europe all the way to the states is just way to Risky. You also will know that sending coins by mail is not legal in most European countries so even if you had paid for the insurance it would likely have been rejected! |

I have no understanding of these comments at all as most of the coins I sell are not sold to UK buyers. And I would never sell to a dealer is that would be an utterly pointless exercise as I have to sell to collectors to make a profit. I slab for the international market, especially US buyers and more UK buyers are paying a premium for a decent slab result. For example, I bought I 1993 Panda and when it came back MS69 the valued more than doubled.....fact not opinion. Finally the issue of risk is a valid one but I have been getting coins slabbed in the US and Canada for about 6 years and this is the first theft.

Why not go through PCGS Paris or even one of PCGS UK agents?
I feel sorry for you because one loss like that wipes out a lot of hard work not to mention the bitter taste.
Maybe make a yearly visit to the States and hand deliver a bl**dy great package.

Okm Marbery518, you answered my challenge, you slab becuse your market is American collectors. As for my comment re dealers it also applies to European based collectors. YOu said you weren't sure what I was sayign I was saying I couldn't understand the value of sending UK coins to the US for slabbing given the risk.
I well know you can take bullion rounds have them slabbed and some collector will pay a ridiculous premium for it..... the fact is a real, IMHO, numismatist wouldn't be so gullible. Perhaps ( I am serious) thats why you focus on the American market. I don't want to take the thread off track; But You will understand my point of view more when I say I believe TPGs have dumbed down coin collecting! By dumbing it down they have probably increased the market size but they have also made Many US based coin collectors and dealers dependant on the TPGs.

Not sure there's much humble about your opinion, but everyone's got one. My appetite for slabbing may only be modestly reappraised but yes, the loss has wiped be out....cancelled PCGS membership and a shame as they are more confident about slabbing Chinese coins when NGC run scared and wimp out......charging you and failing to come up with an opinion.....

Man I feel horrible for your losses - If I send a coin package for grading to a TPG it is always in a box, wrapped with brown paper, then sealed with kraft paper tape and mailed insured via registered mail service. The absolute safest way of shipping coins - period. Expensive but worth it, never once in hundreds of packages some over $50K in value were ever lost or went missing. Did you report the loss to your local police? I know it may seem pointless but sometimes the police are able to correlate losses leading to an investigation, and sometimes a conviction.

I am not sure they would have any interest and just fob me off and say complain to Royal Mail......and no, no coins came back and USPS didn't bother replying to me either.

This happened to me a year ago. I submitted my five best coins to NGC (including my 1889-CC)only to get a call from NGC saying the envelope arrived empty and with a hole in it. It was one of the worst days of my life. I had to fight tooth and nail with the post office for about 3 months to get reimbursed through insurance.
