Put down a tarp on the floor and empty the whole thing... then roll around in it and toss it in the air

I agree, that 1923 is a beaut with a nice strike. From far away it looks like a 1928. Had me fooled at first glance.

I always love the opportunity to search massive change jars! Especially the ones that have been gathering dust for 20-50+ years.

Your results so far look promising... a stray Barber quarter is hopefully a sign that this barrel's original owner was both a coin collector and a terribly disorganized one! I searched one a few years back that belonged to my neighbors... it was a ~3.5 foot tall novelty Coke bottle piggy bank that eventually split open under its own weight. The owners had a modest coin collection (tons of world/US from ca 1850-modern, but nothing of any real value) and a five year old daughter who loved to help clean up. I went through the pile in exchange for a cut of what they would have taken to the bank--came away with an '09-VDB cent and some common date Buffalo nickels, plus bought a heap of copper cents and 40s nickels at face. There was no silver in that batch, so hopefully you will have even better luck than I did!

Happy hunting!

Well, got through all the coins and here are the results:

6496 copper cents
5647 zinc cents
1 Barber quarter
$17 in quarters, nickels, dimes, halves (no silver except barbour)

Included in those totals:
36 foreign, mostly Canada
91 wheat cents
870 copper cents that I will take a closer look at later
180 zinc that I will take a closer look at
11.5 pounds of red copper (rolls of 1973's, lots of 74 and 79)

I mentioned in my first post about this hoard, that my first handful pulled the barbour quarter which really excited me. That was the only silver, I am beginning to think that that was a prank played by my wife. She understands how crazy I get when I come across lots of old coins. She may have just wanted to see how crazy this would really make me. You know what they say about payback.

I will post any really good finds when I get the time to look closer.

You have to let us know if your wife seeded that hoard.

I have to add I really enjoyed following this.
