All great advice, and much appreciated... I think I will stick to graded coins, to be sure, as it just got too expensive assuming that the item titles were accurate!

Thanks to all for your replies and insight, I truly appreciate it

May I please add one more thing

Personally I think a RAW Morgan seller really does not know what the history is.

His motivation is more cash for his coin.

Unfortunately the majority of raw coins on ebay are not slabbed & certified because they are "details" coins.

Not really. Many coins are not graded because the cost to do so is cost-prohibitive in relation to the coin's worth. Many people simply cannot afford to slab every one of their coins. There are a multitude of other reasons why not: distrust or dislike of grading companies in general, wanting to be able to see and hold a coin without the plastic, putting the coin into an album, etc.

I do not quite understand why "motivation to sell" is being confused with blatant and obvious signs of cleaning? These are two completely independant issues. If the coin has Obvious signs of cleaning, list and describe it as such....Many times over, these are not visible in auction photos, but blatantly obvious even under 2-4x magnification.

Motivation or not, honesty will motivate me to not return an unethically-listed coin - every single one of them...and in particular the ones listed as Gem-BU or Choice-BU...These terms are tossed around like we are idiots, and I am losing my appetite to be part of the idiots.

Do you have any links to recent ebay auctions you won that ended up being crap Morgans? There may be signs that you didn't pick up on that someone here may be able to point out. All part of the education process.

But if hard times comes to me. My plan is to ebay 'em === take at least 6-8 PICs === very few words of description, only to say "I am not an expert on coins, & you can judge the condition of the coin." Then let her rip.

and 14 day return privileges.

Of the last 10 Morgans that I bought on ebay, 7 of them have been clearly cleaned, doctoered altered, polished, etc...

The obvious question to me is, then. why continue to purchase your Morgans on ebay? Unless you live in a really remote area, how about establishing a face to face relationship with one or more local coin dealers? Tell them what you want (and don't want) and what you're willing to pay. That's how I've acquired my best, problem free Morgans (virtually all uncertified), consistently at prices far better than what you'd typically pay for that same quality on ebay, and of course this way you get to examine each in hand before forking over any money. I long ago gave up on ebay for getting any "deals" on raw Morgans, and have never looked back with any regret on that decision.

Here are a few...I hate to do this, as I really am not interested in singling out sellers on ebay, so please understand that this is not an indictment of a particular seller...I am most certainly interested in learning from you experts, as I would imagine that many of you have picked up clues in buying raw coins on the market, something that clearly I have not!

Again, I have perhaps multiple winning bids from each of the sellers below, so again, I am not categorically rebuking these sellers! In fact, one of them below sold me some GOOD coins; the other two struck out every time...

....and in response to the question "The obvious question to me is, then. why continue to purchase your Morgans on ebay?" There are two coin shops nearby, and in both instances, the people are not friendly. The one that is REALLY close to me...the guy is outright standoffish and uninterested in establishing a business relationship with a new client. I don't have serious money to throw around, but I have decent money to spend, so it surprises me that the arrogance of these coin dealers show to new clients....Again, this is not an umbrella statement - just for my situation.

I would VERY much prefer to drive to a local coin shop, as opposed to buying on ebay; Tried that, did not work. Then, I tried to buy twice on Craigslist and the guys tried to scam me before I even left my house, despite appearing very legit.

I DID find a coin shop in BOULDER Colorado that seems very nice...It is a 30 minute drive, but it is a NICE drive up against the Flatirons and foothills, so perhaps that will be my best bet....I got some NICE MS-64 New Orleans Morgans from them (Can I name them? "Collectons" is the name)... So, thinking out loud, yes, maybe I should stick to them!

Make the 30 min drive to Boulder every time you need a coin "fix". Continuing to buy on ebay will just give you unnecessary pain and suffering. ( 30 minutes? You are so lucky!)

You are right Westernsky....You are absolutely right. Sometimes we fail to see the errors in our thinking until other people provide their perspective on "convenience"! I guess a peaceful 20-30 minute drive down Hwy 36 to Boulder is MORE satisying than a disappointing, stressful 30 second walk to the mailbox, fullly-expecting sub-par products!

ebay will be for graded coins, and even at that, only form trusted sources.... Discipline is the piece that is missing for me!

EndTheFed - A 20 minute drive only gets me to the nearest podunk town, with it being 60 miles to the closest coin shops, so I'd consider your situation a no-brainer. Does Boulder have any coin shows, or would it have to be Denver for such? Another good source that I've taken advantage of (although the shows in my region are even a bit farther away than the coin shops).
