I live in Germany, and have been buying coins from overseas - many from the US - for over 20 years. I have never heard from the customs people (who take 7%-19% import duty with relish), that it is illegal to ship coins to germany. All the customs people want is 19 % of declared value for silver and gold coins, and 7 % for copper and bronze. If you pay, they are happy.

Hi bpoc1

What is the OP?

The buyer wrote exactly this...

"Hi. Iam very angry. I have this year already lost 10 coins and a lot of money. Paypal and E-Bay sometimes decide too quickly. I retrieve my money right now no chance. I am very very angry"

If it was just the 19% he was upset about, now that he can't get ebay to squeeze the money from me, why doesn't he go get his coin? Or maybe he wants the money back from eBay(read: me) and then he will go retrieve the coin?

That's you the Original Poster.

Did you declare that you were shipping a coin or a numismatic token? Most overseas shipments that I have received use a term like "numismatic token", which is not incorrect since these older coins are not legal tender anywhere.

Hi Jack
I didn't declare anything. I don't use customs stickers. It was in a small bubble envelope sent by registered mail. I did put the ebay number at the top of my little blurb to the buyer so the customs agents could figure the value from that if they cared to. So far the coin still sits in customs and hasn't been claimed (successfully) by the buyer.

Have you asked him whether he's actually tried to collect the coins he bought tokengord?

How do we know his coins are 'lost'? Maybe they are all sitting at customs. Waiting for him to pay the import duty.

I'd tell him "Want coin? Contact customs".

Oh yes Tom Goodheart the coin is still at customs, at least that what it says on the tracking message...

"Item has been sent to customs in the destination country"

Canada Post is still investigating. they said they would get back to me when they know more.

I just think it's odd gord. If that happened once to me I'd be irritated and try to work out how to resolve it.

But this guy has said he's lost 10 coins! So how come he hasn't figured out why and what to do? He blames ebay and PayPal, but they aren't the key. Instead of demanding his money back each time a coin is held (and causing the sellers to lose out) he surely just needs to resolve the customs issue and claim the coins he paid for IMHO.

Otherwise it's like ordering something by post that won't fit in your letter box and then claiming it's lost if the Post Office hold it for you, no?

Seems fairly straight forward. The buyer is a chancer. He buys and waits to see if the package gets noticed by customs. If it doesn't, he's happy. If it does, he cries Lost in Post and tries for his money back.
He deserves everything except, his money back.

Tom Goodheart and alganbagerap

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I'm not sure I'll ever know exactly what happened or what goes on in the buyers head but I'm sure glad I didn't have to shell out $500 when I did nothing wrong.
Thanks again guys.

As Gord has just said here, it is normally about whether or not a coin has been declared. A number of people I have bought from before now have always declared the contents to be "tokens" rather than coins as people automatically associate coins with currency. People seem to forget coins don't necessarily have to be those we see in circulation...in that sense, labeling them as "tokens" isn't exactly being dishonest

Yes you are right Beeston1990. I have a long history with tokens which is why my name is tokengord. I now collect only counterfeit Spanish colonial silver portrait coins and these are properly called tokens as they were issued by private interests and not the crown.

I have news. The fellow who tried to leave me hanging for the $500+ coin has finally decided he would pay the VAT owing and retrieve his coin. What a low down type of guy. Thanks to every one for your words of encouragement.
