What am I supposed to do, take it back and ask for cash to buy groceries with, then no longer have access to boxes of coins?

Here's what I do.
Run my coin remnants through the bank's coin counter, get cash, pay for new box.
Or, take coin up to teller, and get cash in exchange.. It really is that simple.

Shadz, You've probable heard about dump banks, right? You dump coins at one bank and you pickup at multiple banks. I have 10 banks I get boxes from, I have 2 banks I dump coins at. I never pickup coin boxes at the dump bank and I never dump coins at the Pickup Banks!  Edited by Mr Click

Look for key dates also- the 1950d and 1939d/s are worth way more than way nickels!!

I just take my hundreds of dollars of nickels and cents and dump them in the free coin counter at navy federal, and it gets deposited right into my account. Rinse lather repeat!

Dump banks and free coin counters are luxuries not found in all places.  Why do people think they are everywhere? It is a useful technology or service that actually helps people. This violates the old-fogie traditions of some places that are too lazy to adapt to new things and/or are just lazy to learn the new things. So yeah, those don't exist within a 100 mile radius of me. Glad you all live in the 10 major cities int he country that have those luxuries though. |

Just talk to the tellers at your local banks see what would be the best way to deposit large quantities of coin at their bank. That's what I did and I lived in Po-dunk Idaho. For a while I had to re-wrap my coins then I talked to the banks and found out a US bank two towns over had a coin counter behind the counter that only tellers etc.. could use. If all else fails be truthful and talk to people. It would be a haul but I would save up my coins and make the run every couple of weeks, I wouldn't take it all I would roll some so that I didn't wear out my welcome. Maybe there is an option that you still have yet to explore? Maybe you should buy a coin counter/separator to aid in your re-rolling?

Some places are just that terrible. Sure they will hold a few halves for me, or some $2 bills, but that is the extent the local bank managers will let money just sit around. I can look and reroll a box of coins in a day, it is just there is NO place to take a box of coins. THEY DON'T WANT THEM BACK! Simple as that. If There was such a thing available as a dump back near me I wouldn't be just using grocery money for CRH since I could convert it back from coin. But that is all there is. Sometimes, there are really no other options. Lot of you people just live in lucky areas, be thankful for it. |

Have you searched all banking branches including Credit Unions in your area to locate a coin counter? I once lived an area where I thought there would be no coin counter. Later on I found out that at least two credit unions had them.
Imaging myself living in a Podunk town, I would befriend with local businesses who use large amount of coins so I could persuade them to accept boxes of coins from me than get them from a bank. I would drive to the nearest big city and to buy 800 lbs of coins per trip.

There are none. The closest coin counter is a credit union 100 miles away. other than the CoinStars and the two previously mentioned stores self-checkout that cannot handle more than a few coins as they are practically made to take exact change. the only business that uses large amounts of coins is Walmart as it is the biggest business and they don't need any coins, nor will they sell any. (and they have plenty of halves but wont "do banking" and would only give them out as change at the customer service "IF they are in the register", but wont get them out of the office or whatever) this is really just that crappy of an area, where those modern day luxuries don't exist. |

Talk to your friendliest bank about depositing full bags of coins. They give you "Coinlock" bags, the type with the sealable tops. A nickel bag is $200 worth, Dimes are $1000. They just give them to whomever handles the cash, i.e. Brinks, Loomis. They count to make sure it is right (within 1% tolerance) and then deposit it into your account. I feel like it is more acceptable to make a deposit rather than just cash it in. If you can do this method and are consistently spot on with your bags, many banks will credit your account instantly. It really isn't any extra work for them. They just stick it in the vault and wait for the carriers to do the heavy lifting.

I remember before I had a dump bank. I'd just simply trade a box to the local dollar store for cash. Then again it was pennies not nickels.

Mine just needs 1s and 5s. Tried to give the woman some gold dollars the other day and she kept saying "But we need our 1s". Um yeah that is why she could have given me a $10 bill for the 10 gold dollars. They are just too dumb to realize that they are saving a trip into the bank to withdraw coins and only have to go to a dropbox to deposit. Hey it is their money they are wasting, and everything I have got for CRH has spent so far. Literally. I am out of coins to spend except for Pres $ now until I get a box of nickels and pennies in the morning for buying lottery tickets with. |
