I think it's been buried and probably dug up by a metal detector user.

If the clad layer was lost wouldn't the detail be considerably less then it is? Just wondering.

I was thinking the same thing. I ordered a scale, so if it weighs less than 5.7 grams, that would seem to indicate that it has been altered. If it weighs in at 5.7, do I have an error? Anyone?

No, missing clad layers do not affect the design. Check out the link I posted showing a graded example.

Your coin is post-strike damage, environmental issues. No missing clad layers here. It should weigh close to normal for a quarter.
Edit for spelling.

Send it in for a second opinion if you can afford it.

Slabbing would be a waste of money, when the Environmental Damage is so evident on a coin.

A miising clad layer normally affects the outside lettering of the coin with weakness along the rim. Although the lettering can be read, some of the lettering and rim will not fully strike up. It is rare to have both clad layers missing on the same coin.

Quote: No, missing clad layers do not affect the design. Check out the link I posted showing a graded example. A coin missing a single clad lay MAY still show a full strike, but missing both layers would make it only half thickness and it will have a weak strike. It would also only be half weight.

Here is a partial missing clad and a struck through clading that had fallen off. Note the lost of detail when the clading came off after the after the strike. On the OP's coin it looks like it was found outside and the copper color is on the surface. If carried in the your pocket for a time the silver clading might be seen on the higher points of the devices if carried for a time. PSD
