The first one is a Bob Armstrong graded coin - maybe it looks better in hand with a weak strike? Hard to tell from pics, but isn't particularly attractive and that ebay seller has highish prices. You'll find something nice.

I agree, chequer and as a rule he grades pretty close to what the coin is but.. this one doesn't look AU to me.

I wrote a very nice, non-confrontational message to the seller on ebay about the claimed condition, photos and price. I noted, that in my opinion, that it appeared to be at best mid-XF, and I think that's generous. I also asked if it could have been a weak strike. I received the following answer:

"Hi Jim this coin is graded by Bob Armstrong he is well known and worked for ICCS in the past but is now retired for some time but still has a good eye .Phil"

I decided a couple of things: You can't argue with opinions, I'm sure they run an honest business, mistakes happen (even with ICCS, which is my TPG of choice, despite the ugly flips), and sucky photos suck. I also decided that it isn't worth arguing anything about a coin that doesn't fit into my collection needs. There sure are a lot more sellers out there grossly misrepresenting coins much worse, like this one that could easily go on the "worst coins on ebay" thread.

My problem is, what to settle for at what price, when it shows up. These coins are all over the place.

Well, it won't take the whole ebay link, and it doesn't allow tinyurl. I understand the need for security, so I cant post it, but the item description for searching is: "1871 Prince Edward Island 1 Large Cent World Coin - Canada - Holed"

I can't even find an item number in the extremely long url

This is NOT how I want to get 50 quality posts so I can sell and bid on items.

I have bought a few flips with Bob Armstrong's grades on them and I can say that he does in fact have a good eye and grades pretty conservatively....

At first I thought perhaps it's just the picture that isn't good... but I look at the flip and the staples and the details are there... in the photo.. just the coin really isn't "popping" like an A.U. coin should...

Other members here have given a few links to other coins..... I say wait it out a bit.. and find the one that really "pops"

Here is an ICCS VF30 I sold not long ago. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...291187699280

There is no way that coin is an AU coin.

I wrote to the seller and asked if he would sell it for a price that reflected my perceived grade, which was VF. I was polite and expressed that I didn't want to insult him, but pointed out all the wear visible that could not possibly be AU. The seller responded that he stood by the grade because it was graded by a former ICCS grader. It's hard to argue that kind of thing, so I just let it drop, even though I would never pay an AU price for it. It's just ludicrous to me.
