I work as a cashier at a supermarket and every day I dig through the change looking for wheat pennies and silver coins. I was only given one in change from a customer, the rest I get from rolls (usually 2-3 a day)

I am envious! 55-s is one of my coin roll hunting nemesis coins! I have searched thousands of dollars in cents and still havent found even one!

Quote: 1955-S I would say that one is a bit cause for excitement. I too haven't got mine yet. Tons of 1955, but no S yet.

Now you have me thinking. I just finished up a box of cents the other day, and ended up with one hole-filler that was a fifty-something S-mint. I'm not sure what year was, and it wasn't in particularly great shape. I'm traveling for the next few days and this will keep me wondering about it until I get home. Hmmm....

Lucky! I've gotten the 55-P and the 55-D, but never the S. That's a better date, the lowest mintage Wheat cent of the 40s and 50s.

I get excited about wheats in change as well!
Re throwing them back, it's really rare for me to do that. I've only done it twice, with both of them being too damaged (and common dated) to be worth hanging on to.

Don't forget to check the Coinstars too if possible, and you'll up your average.

I get a wave of excitement anytime I find something 50+ years old in pocket change regardless of denomination or condition. About 2 weeks ago I found a Silver Certificate in my wallet mixed in some ones. I have no idea where I got it.

For the last 20 years I've always put 2 or 3 Wheat Backs in the rolls I return to the bank in hopes a young person finds it and gets interested in collecting coins. Future collector are the key to our collections. Ed

I was at the gas station and I saw a Wheat penny in the give/take penny tray but I felt it innapropriate to take it with the cashier staring at me. but I wish I would have had a penny to exchange it with.

So apparently 1955-S wheats do turn up in change occasionally. I've got mine from a non-collecting distant relative, in a context that made it highly likely that they found it in change; but I never really believed such a coin could possibly turn up that way. Your story makes it slightly more likely.
