Color looks suspect to me. Don't quote me but I believe I have read somewhere to "watch out" for this seller.

Again the thought did run through my mind, why wouldn't they have slabbed it as a large organization with the budget and the resources to get it done. One answer, I guess, is that it would get a details only grade?

That seller is known for having pictures of coins that are not a true representation of the actual coin itself. To me, it looks like an AU-details coin.
I have never bought from this seller, but from my understanding they are generally very good about accepting returns within the proper timeframe

so far the consensus is that it's AU and artificially toned, Thanks for all the input! About natural toning, can it be seen from all angles or when you turn it a certain angle? i.e. is it in the core metal or the lamination on the surface that's getting the tone? I'll be going to my first show in maybe 15 years. speaking of, I pulled out a UK mint set from 1987 and I think I found an error in a proof set. I'm starting a thread in the world error section but I'll include one pic as a tease...  |

The coin looks MS, I don't see any wear in any of the photos. As the others have said, the color is questionable. Call this one UNC details. Not worth slabbing.

I've bought stuff from that seller before. I agree with the other comment (s) regarding the seller. I'm not sure how deceptive their photos are, but they are really good at taking them and showing the coin the the best "light." They could put up higher resolutions photos, or multiple photos of each coin with different, more revealing, less reflective lighting. They clearly have skilled photographers..
They recently changed their policy that they will now no longer offer a grade for raw coins. Probably too many negatives/ returns. They say that you need a "good knowledge of the rare coin business" before you bid. I'm guessing that anyone with a really "good knowledge" would not be buying raw coins at top dollar from them They also say they sell slabbed coins; so yes, I feel they have made a conscious decision to not slab the raw coins they sell. Some of their raw coins go for $500+
If this were a non-details, MS-63+ and it were slabbed, it would go for a lot more $$ than what was paid, and would make up the money for them to have it slabbed.

Oh and 6th Cent, work on your photography a bit,if you can. If you have the camera on a fixed tripod or similar and have the shutter released with a timer, the photos will be clearer and the folks here will give a more accurate option--I say this with peace and love

I agree that it would probably be a waste to send in. I sent in some beauties, highest they got was 60. Unless your gonna get 64, or its a key date, save the vouchers. Just my humble opinion. Nice coin nd thanks for sharing!

I know, I feel guilty for rushing my pics up. I'm not taking as much time as I should, I was just excited to get replies so quickly. But also, some of these coins are in the stapled cardboard holders and on the questionable ones I didn't want to take it out of their packaging in case I really need to return one that was mis-labled or advertised. So the plastic on a few has been giving me trouble.
I have taken this one off the "send in" list. I have 2 nice 1883s I will post to see what you guys think and a 1909 VDB that looks ok enough to get slabbed I think?

yeah I've decided this one's going back.
So when you see toning the colors should radiate from the center out in a circular pattern most likely not waves across the coin? Is that a good way to determine natural toning from man made?
