OK, this is the coolest story I'll hear all day. I don't see a chance of it being a fake - too many of the obvious features of a 3CN, including ones which aren't deliberate (like the missing tops of lettering) are present. At some time in the past, somebody got bored and scratched it up, but I feel that to be evidence in favor of originality.

Not from a roll, just with some loose change. I weighed it, and that seems good, at 1.99g.

Great find ... another reason to pay attention to whatever change comes to your hands.
Limited knowledge on the series ... however I say authentic.

Looks good to me too - date and lettering are all correct. What a find.

Cool find. I think the surface just has some porosity. 3 cent nickles are cool coins to collect and now you have a great 19th century type piece.

I'm thinking of having it sent to be graded, which I haven't done with any of my coins before since pretty much everything else is 20th century, and none of it particularly valuable. Is this something you guys would recommend for this coin?

Nice find! I would not send it it for grading. Spend that money on another coin and enjoy this one as it is.

Possibly someone had a jar or can or something full of change and decided it was time to just dump it all in a bank. There are lots of people out there with stuff like that and if times are bad enough, they just get rid of it all. If they knew it was there, might have thought they were pulling a fast one on someone.

Very nice find, but I agree not worth spending the $'s to get it graded. I had a few really dark indian heads and a couple of v nickles that I put back into circulation a while back just for the fun of it. I didn't want them in my sets so I thought it would be fun to let someone find them in a cash register or in their change. I spent a couple at McDonalds and a couple more at different convenience stores.
