Good to see some Michiganders on the forum. I knew John1 was in Michigan. I'm also a Oakland County native. Grew up in the South Lyon/Novi area. Now live just north of the border in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Canada.
For searching coins. I mainly searched cents (that is until Canada stopped producing the cent and stopped banks from selling them to customers as they want to pull them from circulation). I still get a box or 2 every now and then from a couple banks where the tellers know me. Now I search nickels mainly with a dabble in dimes every so often. Man...I sure miss the cent. Sigh
I also have been metal detecting for years. Hit a rough spot this spring and had to let go of my detector. I will get back into it though. I had a Garrett ATPro. Awesome machine if it fits your budget. Truly is a all terrain machine. Loves the land, beach and water. The Ace 250 and any of the Ace line really are awesome starters. They will not do you wrong. Once you figure out what type of metal detecting you want to do...that will help you greatly in determining which machine to look at that fits your budget. There are machines that are better for relic hunting over coins...silver over gold and so forth. Another thing to remember...when the description of a detector says that the coil is water proof/resistant...that does not mean the control box of the detector is. If you get the coil wet and raise it vertically above the control box...water can and will travel down the shaft (either inside the shaft or outside) and that is a huge danger to the control box. Just be sure to do your research and pick a machine that will fit your needs. :)
Most importantly...have fun with it. THat is what a hobby is supposed to be about. :)

thanks for the info man, well I'm from Saginaw MI, born and raised. Love the outdoors to death pretty much what keeps me here. I am basically an example of what has went wrong with our country as a whole. I am 28 BA history, unemployed except for sub. teaching which really isn't my profession. Needless to say I took the max I could each semester for loans, dropped out of grad school 3x, I'm in debt now till I'm 55. I use coin collecting as a way out of lifes problems, ill get into metal detecting next spring, sounds like a lot of fun. :) this isn't really a personal forum but darn, as I get older I really see the mistakes I've made at times in life. Just happy to have a beautiful wife by my side each day. Good luck out there, I'm having 8 boxes of dimes to go through next week through first merit, ill report findings. No clue how to post pics, if someone wants to show ill post all my findings so far in a month of searching.

The photo below is my first attempt at posting a photo on this site...If I can do it, anyone can do it! naburt, first upload the photo from your camera to your computer as a .jpg file. Next, when you click "post reply", simply use the image optimizer offered as part of posting a reply. The process is provided step-by-step, so simply follow the steps and you should be able to post photos. Do not get discouraged about your financial situation. Every day brings the opportunity to make better decisions. It sounds like you have a lovely wife and a decent sized CRH bankroll, which are true blessings. I'll mention this in hopes it will help you stay positive...My wife earned a BA in history, then realized within a year or so she could not get a decent paying job w/o graduating with a doctorate degree, which she was not interested in. So she went back to college and earned a MS in Civil Engineering and soon thereafter became gainfully employed. We've since paid off her college debt. This could be you!

Quote: ....ill get into metal detecting next spring, sounds like a lot of fun. :) I started detecting last year and wouldn't really call it "fun"; more like relaxation to me. Kind of like fishing. I was thinking of mentioning golf but you can learn that it quickly moves from relaxing to frustrating; and those expensive clubs get broken real easy when they get pounded on trees and cement cart lanes.

ya. I don't have a huge bank roll, just a few hundred at a time but my bank allows me to order a lot come in grab a box, search take to other bank, bring money back repeat. lol. the kennedy is just a NIFC has a slight nick in it though. its a 2012. not sure if these will ever be worth anything much. the Mercury my wife found in really good shape too 1937. I have 13 1943 Ps War Nickels, seems to be a very common one unlike the 1942s. The buffalos I do have 2 1920 S's but I'm doubting they are worth much had to use vinager to bring the dates back. I have no idea what them things are worth. id figure at least double face value though
