One person asked for an opinion on a coin,
six people noted they thought the coin was cleaned,
one is not in full agreement. It is not a perfect
science. It is subjective and full of opinion, but
we have to be respectful of others' opinions, even when
we disagree.

47p7...it's cleaned.
Both obverse pics show the telltale cleaning signs.....parallel hairlines.
You will NOT see these on any non-cleaned coins.
This is coin collecting 101 basics.

A rookie question on trying to grade this coin from pictures supplied. I am wondering how someone is to determine if scratches that show on a picture are not scratches. If I was to grade this 48 50c piece, I would have to assume (yes,I know what it means) that they are there. It is the same the other way around, by changing the lighting,
scratches that do not show on the picture, I would have to grade the coin scratch free. Unless you have the coin in hand, I don't see how you can be 100% sure of it's condition. I'm not taking sides with anyone, but just wondering the best way to determine this. This debate has come up more than once and can be confusing to someone fairly new to the site.

JimmyD...yes, I agree that you cannot be 100% sure when grading from a picture.
I have said this many times before.
I'm assuming how the coin is 'in hand' is how the coin appears in the picture, then I believe the coin is cleaned.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I'll try to take better pictures and post it here. Disappointed if it's actually cleaned, it looks nice in hand.

Because hairlines perpendicular to the light source are going to get more definition, it's easy for any higher grade circulated silver coin to look wiped under certain lighting. But once you turn the coin under a light source, you may get a different impression entirely. I usually hold off declaring a coin whizzed/polished unless there's a lot of glaring evidence... polarbear Edited by DVCollector

Thank you Super Dave, I/we know YOU are an expert in Photography and your opinion and experience carries tons of weight.. I am not looking for support,(but it is much appreciated) just fairness to any poster, especially a new member. Polarbear. DVCollector, dead on also, thank you Polarbear, please let this little speed-bump of hasty "opinions" not discourage you. Usually we are all good guys trying our best to help. perhaps you have a scanner and use it to scan the coin. Make sure you scan at least 1200 DPI in the final scan. And also use photos. Post them again. Ask Superdave in the Photo-forum to help you . I am sure he does not mind. Edited by 47P7

wow this has gotten a lot of attention... 47p7 good points and all, although it is not conclusive and a well bearing point in which that it is cleaned or not, the coin does look cleaned, it could be cleaned or it could be the camera. How bout we tell the new member welcome and hope he or she is doing well, tell them what a cleaned coin looks like, yes it Has EF traits. let their eye see if it is cleaned and if it is the camera. Polarbear, these pictures do not work well.
sign up with Photobucket.com. you can upload your pictures and then post them here. Many members use that.
and, please take your pictures directly and straight from the top.
what kind of camera are you using?

OK...maybe it's not 'harshly' cleaned as I said earlier, but it's still cleaned in my opinion.
At the very best, if it's not cleaned, it's heavily rubbed or it's been heavily knocked around.
