If they wouldnt get lost in the mail I would trade you some US 50s nickels for some Canadians! Why aren't there any places that jsut trades circulating coinage from other countries?
Seriously, someone should set up a website and trade them without consideration for "economic value", but a 5-cent piece for a 5 cent piece. I would send someone or an intermediary a nickel for a 5 yen coin! Quarter for one of them painted Canadian maple leaf quarters, I would do that too. foreign coins are always more interesting than local coins because.. well they are new ideas for designs. Those beavers you got.. I just really like then better than Monti and Jefferson!

shadz, I don't think you'll be very happy to trade a US$ 1000 with Rp 1000. Just saying that some currencies have an insane number of zeroes and cent values are worth nothing.

not currencies, coins. I would give the same number of zeroes in coins for it if it was a coin. Rp 1000, whatever that is, I would give 1000 cents for. that is 20 rolls of pennies.
you think I wouldnt give $5 for 5 pounds sterling?
Also it would depend on how interesting it is. I get pesos and other things like the fils and millim in boxes of coins and have no idea what it is worth but if shaped and sized like a US nickel, I figure I paid a nickel for a coin to add to my collection, and for foreign money, that is worth it to me.
Did I make or lose money getting the 100 kuwait fils instead of a quarter? I have no idea, but I got a new coin from a new country!
If someone were to make a website for doing something like that, I would assume they would be smart enough to know what they are doing, and knowing 1USD = 120 Japan Yen; I would still give 1 cent for a 1 yen coin, 5 cents for a 5 yen coin, $1 for a 100 yen coin. All because they are interesting to me and I don't collect to make a profit. I already know I have made losses, and that is just from boxes of halves being short!

Hey shadz,those colourizied maple leaf coins are called war of 1812 commemorative quarters. I can probably find an AU-50 example for you if you want to send me an old silver Rosie. Send me a pm if interested.
And slur has a point, who wants to trade me a silver eagle for my loonie?

See that is just being greedy. I didn't say a Ryu gold bar for a $1 coin.... I am talking current coinage. Whatever Yen coin was issued this year I would give any common cent I could lay my hands on in trade for it. even a 58 wheat. (Those seem to be breeding in my collection because I keep checking and find more than I thought I had. Might need to do a good sort through all the wheats to prevent that!)
I didn't even know Canada had a $5 coin...was it a circulation coin or one of those special ones like bullion buffalo or Silver Eagle?
I am being more serious here that If I were to send, and be able to do so, chegur a roll of random US nickel for a roll of random Canada nickels. collectors type of trades, not speculator kind of trades. But of course, since 2006, I couldn't do that.

The $5 coin is a SML (silver maple leaf) and is the equivalent to your ASE. I was joking and know what you are saying. What you are describing is CCF. If I have an old nickel commemorative or a centennial nickel I could send it to you for a War Nickel or an old nickel in general. Lots of people do that on here. Start a want list or poke around the world coin forums. |

The problem with trading Internationally and even within Canada with heavy items, is the cost of shipping here. Anyone know the cost of sending a roll or more to the US? Sure wish we had those cheap flat rate boxes you guys do.

I didn't spot anything, but haven't looked closely yet - still going through the Canadian. I did see a 2014 and was surprised at seeing the current year up here.

Like foreign exchange but without the conversion rate nonsense for people who don't care that they are giving a 1/100 of a USD for 1/120 of a US dollar by trading a US penny for a Japan 1 yen coin. If a roll is sent in of US nickels, then someone send a roll of 5 yen coins (or 40 in an envelop, whatever) then they are traded as that. coin for coin, denomination for denomination, but the website is the go between. For people that don't have coin clubs or dont have access to foreign coins but want them without having to pay places like Littleton $40 for 50 common current coins from non-US countries. Getting a 2 euro cent coin would be 2 US cents worth because of denomination, even though they can appear in a roll of US pennies in place of 1 penny.
@chequer: Do you plan to make a little folder or album of US nickels you find? Like the Canada pennies I have found I got a folder for to put in even BEFORE I knew they were going extinct, just because I found so many and to help sort them. Haven't got but about a dozen nickels yet from Canada so haven't needed to get a folder for them, but probably will when there is enough to make it less hard to fill the remaining holes. @shadz - what a cool idea. It could be membership based, to get the funds to obtain the "float" of currencies, then only postage to be paid (or something like that). Of course, my worry would be postage, where it is so high from Canada - and not likely terribly cheap for US residents to send it Internationally either. I never really thought about a folder for my US coins from circulation because I'm not a folder sort of collector (prefer 2x2s and boxes), but that does sound like a good idea. |
