Eva....

"Could it "bleed thru" from one side to the other?" I'm no metallurgist, but I doubt if that could happen.

I'm gonna guess and say that the stain on the front and back might be due to a bad alloy of the metal in that area.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it ('till somebody comes up with a better explaination)!

A stain would be on the surface. If it were an imperfection in the planchet, then it could be through the whole planchet. But this is a stain. Even plated cents can have stains on the plating.

This one had one on the obverse. But the reverse looked nice.

I feel the stain dropped the grade a lot.

On the reverse: Notice the double dies or double struck? Look how the "B" looks like a "5" in the word PLURIBUS...

Eva ,I can tell you want your 1955 Lincoln to be worth something. but in my experience with Lincoln
wheat cents it's not a double die nor a poor mans double die where the last 5 shows an image around the bottom of the number. in 1955 the all the mints (P,D,S) showed minor errors here and there. the grade of EF-40 would be appropriate for your coin. I can see your concern about the B on reverse looking like a 5 , but again just a minor mint error. in my opinion there is no value to this coin.

The 19 on the date looks like MD (Ejection issue). The reverse on the EPU maybe just coin contact. The first set of images made the coin look a lot better. The last set showed us what it really looks like in hand. I had my hopes up at first for a lot better grade, but the last images shows the coin wear on the obverse. So I'm thinking this is a normal nice circulated cent. Keep looking, there are a lot a varieties just waiting to be found.

Machine Doubling (Damage to the coin during the strike.) I refer to it as machine damaged as nothing is not doubled, but reduced in size by die movement damaging the devices.
