Shouldn't an 1867 have the shallow N reverse? Doesn't look like one to me...

Yep--the '67 is a shallow N rev.
Of course, they usually get the date wrong too--there was only one date type for this year.

I would say definitely a fake and not a good one. Should be a shallow N reverse. Date and denticles don't look right

I think this is a fake too.
This coin is an 1867 with a bold N. However, they only made the bold N's from 1870-76, then 1878-09.

Is the coin itself a counterfeit, or is it an authentic coin with an altered date? The color and surfaces around the date look different than the rest of the coin.

I don't think there's a practical way--for the digits (or that "N") to be altered/spread out, without showing the damage. It's fake to the core.
This serves as a cautionary tale--they're getting the overall details OK--so we need to look for the "weakest link"--often the date area.

Yep . ebay really needs to have some sort of process to "authenticate", if you will, through pictures by a specialized team to determine if the coin is counterfeit.

I'll just add...don't entrust your purchases to ebay catching all the fakes--knowledge is the best defense.

ebay had that. They disbanded it a few months ago, and the thieves are running rampant. I'm not exaggerating.

Thanks everyone. I am testing my ability to spot fakes and this input really helps.

I contacted both the seller and ebay and got no response from either. The coin sold for $61.00 and the "winning" bidder probably thinks he got a good deal.

Just reading his feedback, I wouldn't have bid on his coin if it had been real.

And that bit in the auction about the "strong reverse" suggests to me the seller knows it should have the "shallow N". $60 of unmerited profit.

Fake.

Another indicator: The denticles on the obverse are thin, skinny things with gaps between them. They should be touching like in DVCollector's certified example.
