Maybe a 40% silver Bicentennial Ike. They say 1976 but all of the 40% silver one are Type I and they were all struck in 1975.

If not the exact year, then perhaps:
Granddad was two when this coin was first made ---
Auntie Ann was 5 when this nickel bought an ice-cream cone ---
Cousin George was 10 and he remembered spending this dollar for a pair of skates ---

In other words, if the exact year is problematic then "create' a story to make your project 'come alive!'

Air-Tites in an album do seem like a good way to go with a project like this. I was also looking at the snap plastic 2x2 holders. Apparently there are some 9x pages you can get that can accept the snap plastic 2x2s. Then perhaps a blank Dansco binder to put them in. Just brainstorming here.

I like all of the ideas. I think I might start air-tite or album and then spend time on finding the right presentation while I start the fun of finding the right coins. I'd ultimately like to make it more of a presentation/display piece.

A neat little (or large) chart for visualization can be produced at the Family Echo website. Nothing to buy. Here is one I prepared on there for a friend. That is just six generation; each generation doubles the size of the chart and number of coins. Six generations is roughly a 200 year span between birth year sets. Four generation would seem ideal to me.

I recall seeing a family tree of quarters growing up - I wonder where that went after my grandmother died?

Here's a neat idea that was started by my grandfather- a hollow Christmas ornament with a slot for a nickel. My grand father put one in for the year on Christmas. The ornament was so heavy that it hung deep inside the tree.

I'm going to take a look at the air-tite display cards. It sounds like there could be potential there! The aquarium idea would make a great display case, but I want to keep everything together and not make it easy in the future to break it up (more chance of it having a longer life and not broken up in the future)

I'm thinking of starting with my kids and work up to their Great-Great-Grandparents, 5 generations from 1878 (oldest identified GG on my side) to 2014 (my youngest child)- I do have some research and identifying to work on my wife's side.

About 10 years ago, I bought Choice BU Lincolns from the birth years of the five members of my family--1927, 1929, 1954, 1959 (me), and 1960 (27/29->my parents, 54/60->my sisters).

I then mounted them in a frame on a green velvet background and gave the gift to my parents for Christmas. They loved it and my dad still keeps it up on the table in the front room. My mom passed away in 2012.
