Good idea I think from the ones on ebay it's the gold band holders that seem to tone coins the most. And it looks like a yellow ring that only goes a little way, esp. on the ASEs.

I see the ring around the coin. Will it hurt the value of quarter?

Regardless of whether the new new PCI is trying to resurrect the quality of old, or trying to reclaim the respect of old with new quality standards and conservative grading, they are not there yet. I have seen the new slabs up for auction at online auctions, but have never examined one in hand, so I am not going to make the " blanket statement " that their new grading standards are still inferior to PCGS or NGC. If I was to see a coin slabbed by the new new PCI in hand, I would still buy the coin not the slab. But I can tell you from the auctions that I have seen, these slabs are still getting no respect from the marketplace. And that is the bottom line. PCGS has a 1987 MS 70 valued at $5000, NGC has theirs valued at $1750. APMEX was reducing inventory on 1987 NGC MS69 ASEs for $31.95 . And THAT is the bottom line.

I sent three coins to them back in the old days and I thought their assessment of grades were spot on.
Quick turnaround too if I remember correctly. They were based in Georgia if I recall.

(Green/Red/Blue borders) 2001 and earlier? (Green/Red borders) under Leslie Shade's ownership? September 2001 to March 2002. (Gold border) After the sale to Beardsley in March of 2002.

So here is one I saw today PCGS has a 1960 D MS67 Washington quarter population of 10. It's value guide gives a value of $3250 for this coin in a PCGS holder. This particular coin sold for $50 at auction today. Draw your own conclusions

Label looks like it was printed on an inkjet.

the difference in prices advertised for the different slabbers should worry everyone. I can't tell the difference between a 69 and 70, can most of you? PCGS says 5k, NGC says 1750.00. Who is right?, what happens when peoples minds change on which TPG they like better? Slabbing modern coins is a rip off, in my opinion, Buy the coin not the holder... pay what YOU think it is worth, or pass it by.

Nobody can see a 70 without magnification, but anyone can see a 70 if you have it. It's easy - if you can see a mark with 5x anywhere on the coin, and the strike is not flawless, it's not a 70. With that said, if you look at a random batch of 70's from any TPG in images like Heritage's archives, you'll never buy a 70 again.

Quote: They were based in Georgia if I recall. Correct, I know CCF Member and ANA Governor Mike Ellis worked for PCI and DGS for awhile before he went to ANACS in Austin (I believe) maybe he will see the thread and comment on them here. Back in the 19990's I always liked the PCI holders and thought their grades were pretty much dead on, I have quite a few 2 cent pieces that are accurately graded in old PCI holders.

I have some new data to add... /1/ 2012.02/ 1774 (there are spaces between the / and the 1774. Very much a purple color. Has a hologram (smaller than the one shown by denco7 above) and the http://www.pcicoins.com web address /2/ & /3/ 2012.02/671x. Blue, like denco7's. No hologram seal on the reverse and no sign it was ever there!
