Double droll for this one. MS-64 at least.

IMO this is a poster coin for MS-62 at ICCS, its got nice detail and cameo but most 1948s do. I personally wouldn't buy this coin because of the scratches on the obverse since they're so distracting on an otherwise very nice coin. My LCS has a coin almost identical to this in contact marks and eye appeal sitting in an ICCS MS-62 holder and none of the people looking for good coins such as this will touch it.
Feel free to call me Will.

Love the frostiness on the obverse, PCGS might have given that one the extra point for "eye appeal"...

PCGS 63 based on what we see nowadays. Superb reverse. Great eye appeal.

If from the 1990's it is probably in a OGH. Some of the coins graded back then are now considered conservatively graded. PCGS MS63...Cameo, but probably no cameo mention on holder. I could see this coin as being a possible candidate for re-simiting for a upgrade to MS64 if it's not already. Looks very nice.

Thanks everyone. The old green holder (OGH) says PCGS MS63. IMHO it may be a stretch to get a MS64 at PCGS. However the markings on the neck look to be from the strike and the marks on the face are fairly superficial. BTW I purposely took a picture that emphasized the marks on the coin since I wanted the most criticism. The coin has so much lustre and so I wonder if it is an SP coin. Dollarman - how were the fields on your coin? ICCS likes to focus on the fields and the fields are quite stunning on this coin. I have MS62's from ICCS and I'd say that it is a possibility ICCS might grade it taht way but I would go to PCGS for getting it regraded.
I had a look at the MS64's on the Heritage Auction site (they have the best photos if you ever want to compare coins). It looks like a MS63+ to me and so I would hope that a Cameo or the eye appeal may push it to MS64. Not sure if I will buy it or not. Fully priced as a MS63 but these '48's don't seem to go cheap. The eye appeal of this coin is so darn enticing.
Thanks again everyone.

I had a 1948 that I graded in the very early years of PCGS as a MS63, sure enough, it was re-graded and came back MS64 in a blue label, but mine (bought in 1985 from Chuck Moore) had a weak strike, not nearly as impressive as the one noted in this thread.

Tripoli - It does have a nice strike. If some of us think that this has a shot at being a PCGS MS64, then that is good enough for me. Someday I will send it down to PCGS, but I am in no rush. Into the safety deposit box it will go!

@pfrien, yeah it was one of the few times when I actually made a nice profit on a coin!...I paid $1500 raw in 1985/86, then it sold eventually for $3200 at auction in a MS64 holder.

Good way to run up your post count Vankid. Bring up a three week old thread and add nothing to it.
