Given the distribution of wear, I do not like how thick those rims are. They should be pressed further back against the field if they're that wide and worn.
However, this one would be tough to judge confidently without it in-hand.

I bought mine raw, but I kind of trusted Bill Fivaz when I bought it from him.
As for the OP's coin, something doesn't look right, but I could be wrong. I would need to look at it in hand.

It looks ok to me, except for the thick rims. Why bother to buy a raw one, when there are plenty of them already graded.

Fake, the rims are too wide and the fields too clean.

IMO, with Trade dollars widely counterfeited since their initial minting, I would be leery of any Trade dollar not certified. |

Looks good to me from the pics. Hand looks good, letters and stars look uniform. I wouldn't be afraid to buy it if the weight was spot on and if it feels good in hand. (But everybody is paranoid of these things so tread with caution.)

These are faked way too often for me to bu one raw. I would try and get a graded one.

No to stir the pot...but when most of you say "go graded", do we know of any fake Trade dollars that are in fake slabs? |

That is my point, and the continuing point of MANY people in the forum. "buy the coin and not the holder". To me I see no difference between my desire to buy a raw or graded coin as I am focused on the coin and not the plastic. I would genuinely say (and this is just my OCD kicking in) that if you cannot determine a real vs. fake coin on your own, you need to do more research and get some samples in hand before you start buying. Many hobbies I have partaken in I have read and learned for YEARS before I bought my first item. I love how supportive our forum is, but if you find yourself needing to lean on the forum to make a buying decision you are buying too soon. The best way to learn is by making the risks based on YOUR knowledge base. If you always make your decision based on others opinions you will not remember what you have learned nearly as well! There is nothing like being burned a time or two to get you to remember what you learned! Use the forum as a tool, not a crutch. :)
I say this as a professional educator, and try and instill in people, that in todays information age, it can become too easy to rely on the internet as your "brain". If you do that, should an opportunity arise and you cant get access to the internet, you may miss out on some great buys. For example.since the advent of smart and semi-smart phones, I find it amazing (myself included) how if you were stranded somewhere without your cell phone, most of us wouldn't know a single phone number to call someone at in order to have someone come pick us up. When I was a kid (before cell phones) I knew the phone number for easily a hundred people, today I would be surprised if anyone can go past 10 if even half that. This is the same for collectibles, don't let technology become your knowledge repository....learn it, love it, and you will win more often.

I agree the look of the wide rim is a problem with this coin, avoid it.
