Here is the edge, if that will help shed some light on this (or confuse even more).

I see what appears to be some rather interesting doubling on EPU. That peripheral doubling coupled with the odd rim appearance leads me to believe that this coin may have been double struck with the first one in collar and the second one a broadstrike.

My first thought was encasement as well, but with further examination of the pictures I think biokemist may have it right.

Thank you for that assessment. How would something like that happen? I'm not very well-versed in the minting process (or errors for that matter). Is this something that should be sent in to a TPG?

Whether or not to get it slabbed depends on whether or not you intend to keep it or sell it. There's an extra fee for errors.

I got the first error coin I ever found slabbed just because it's precious to me. I found it decades ago and didn't even know what I had until a few years ago. But I have no plans to sell that coin. I just wanted it protected and properly/professionally labeled.

Nice find.

I agree with biokemist6 that the coin displays a centered double strike, with the first in-collar and the second out-of-collar (or partially confined by the collar).

This coin was part of a large collection of my Great Grandfathers. I believe he was actively collecting in the 20's and 30's. Most of his collection was auctioned off in the 60's. I have the unsorted minors and junk (not to me!), mostly world coins. As any coin collector would, I believe he kept any error that he came across. Of all of the Lincoln cents that I have (maybe 50), about 20 are errors.

I am trying to learn as much about what I have as I can. Some to sell, and some to keep.

I would like to add: I started organizing and identifying this collection about 25 years ago using the Standard Catalog of World Coins. It was difficult and time consuming, but totally turned me into a numismatist. I have loved this hobby ever since. I actually set it all aside for the last 15 years because I found identifying everything was just too hard. That is a very different story today. With Google, the information is much more available. But the CCF has been the most amazing community of experts and knowledge. I can't say enough about how cool this forum is.

You probably have your Grandfathers genes for collecting. I have the bug from one of my Grandfathers.

I do Coop. I never met the man, he died 7 years before I was born. But with his collection, I feel a very close bond to him.

Sure, I could post them here or start a new thread. I have new lenses for my iPhone, so I'm working on better photography right now.

I've also found many world coins with cracked and/or worn dies. I wonder if that was something he liked or if they are simply part of the world coin population.

Try and use one coin per thread and put the date/mint mark on the title. That way anyone wanting to search for that thread will have an easier time finding it.
