Hi Don,

This coin is the latest subject in the CN Journal's 'Canadian Spice' column. Both you, and CCF, were acknowledged for finding and reporting this variety. If you are not a member of the RCNA, let me know, and I'll send you a copy of the column.

Great eyes, and keep up the hunt!!

Roger

Just awesome Roger. I am thrilled. I did subscribe to the
RCNA and received my first two issues of the CN Journal
last month, read your Canadian Spice article on 1964 Cents
in the Oct./Nov. 2015 edition with interest. Thanks very
much for the credit in the upcoming article, I can't wait
to read it, and frame it. Will keep my 20X loupe by my
side at the ready, happy hunting and thanks once more.

Woohoo!

Don't forget that when design elements are incused and show doubling, most of the time it is due to Mechanical Doubling.

Thus, if I am seeing it correctly in images below, the doubling of the tips of the sun are incused in the shield of arms, so it is a die shift.

Not so fast... positive relief elements also show notching, like the corners of the A's in CANADA and inside corners of the L in COLUMBIA...

I'd like to see those pictures DEVLEC because, unless you are describing another coin, the pictures presented in this post are classic Mechanical Doubling.

Obvious thinning of the relieves on date! (ie. inside loop of digits 9 and 8 are enlarged)

Here is the picture of the tip of the sun that I modified. The cut out view shows the stepping in the design element.

Oh that's easy... become a member of the RCNA and you will have access to them all...

(by the way, the pictures you are showing, are from a machine doubled 1971 PL dollar, not the doubled die dollar)

So I was correct, you are describing another coin.

You see how confusing it may be.

Thanks for the information.

I revive this old thread - just to provide an update on this coin.

I published about this Doubled Die Reverse in the CN Journal in 2015.

Now, PCGS will recognize this as a DDR. I just got this one back.

Silverdon - I want to thank you again for bring this new variety to light, in a series that I love.

Great news Roger, nice to see the DDR recognized by PCGS.

I'll have to submit mine now. Great work on the variety
elements, the notching, and detective work and thanks for
the acknowledgement. I replaced the broken link pictures.

After a short conversation with a representative at PCGS, the 1971 DDR nickel dollar is now in the proof-like registry (with varieties). This one is easier to find, as I have found at least five at coin shows and several collectors here have also found it easily.
