Lambecolin: Do you know the history of the coin? Hard to tell
without having the coin in hand.Maybe PCGS thought the coin had
been cleaned and artificially retoned.
I purchased a raw 1948 Dollar about 10yrs ago at auction that
had similar toning. I thought it had a solid chance to go 62/63.
PCGS body bagged it.
I knew the history of the coin as it came from a collection of
world crowns that had been put together over 30yrs ago. The
individual keep his coins at home in 2x2 paper envelopes. I
purchased a few other toned world crowns from the same
collection and they were graded by PCGS without a problem.
The auctioneer offered me a complete refund but I
passed.
Fast forward to a couple of years ago.I resubmitted the
coin again(raw). It came back as genuine not gradable.
Well I cracked it out and sold it raw at auction for
$1400+ I would not be surprised to see the coin in a
TPG mint state holder down the road.
If you have been at this for any length of time it can
be a love/hate relationship with the TPG's at times.

She's gorgeous . Maybe a MS63 if we can get bigger pictures. Not sure the reason for the "no grading", but AT seems to be the general answer

PCGS Code92---Harsh cleaning--abrasive--faint hairlines at a particular angle--this is the most frustrating of the ' NO GRADES '
Above pics have only 53kb.
Hairlines visible at 15X--20X
I will follow up with more resolution pics

This coin sold on Dec 24 2014 in a Heritage internet sale
for $176.24 I thought the coin looked familiar. You can
access Heritages archives for a better photo.

Thanks for the bigger pic. I see the hairlines...

..but I don't know why they would not put a grade on it..
Some other TGP's would probably put a fair grade on it..

It does look very nice in the smaller format pic..

Yes.. It looks like EF40 at least, I don't know why they wouldn't put a 'details' tag on it?

EF-45 easy, toning is certainly questionable, and the hairlines don't help either. My guess is, this coin was cleaned and then someone tried to hide the cleaning under artificial toning, by the looks of it, some sort of rapid sulfur toning, likely from a boiled egg.

PCGS probably gave it a AU Details.

PCGS will assign a numeric code to problem coins. In this case a 92
which indicates an improperly cleaned coin.
NGC will assign a details grade with an explanation to a problem coin.
In both cases neither PCGS or NGC will attribute a problem coin with a
numeric grade.
If you want a problem coin to receive a numeric grade and an explanation
you will have to send it to ICCS.
PCGS and NGC have very accessable web sites explaining their grading methods.
