It is a great looking coin. Is the obverse gouge enough to merit details grade? I don't know.

Great coin and story, amazing score for your friend. Excellent photos as well. I agree with EF-45 detail. The softness on the reverse is certainly strike-related and I assume that is a common feature for this variety. The two digs would probably result in a "damage" notation if the coin were certified but nevertheless I'd get it slabbed to verify authenticity. Your friend (or future owner) could always crack it out and retain the slab insert as evidence the coin is genuine. Two thumbs up!

Well the latest news is that we've agreed on a fair price and the coin is now mine! It's been a dream of mine to own a pre-1804 Dollar since I was a kid so I am over the moon!
I will be sending this coin to either PCGS or NGC. Does there tend to be a preference for early American coins?

I'd go with PCGS as a first choice; they have a better rep particularly when it comes to getting the best sale price. You should be able to find an authorized dealer in the UK who will submit it on your behalf.
Congrats on a fine addition to your collection!

PCGS. Even in a PCGS Details slab that's a $2000+ coin.

That is an amazing find and looks genuine in the new images. The detail is close to XF. My guess is a Details grade for damage but regardless your new pics show a valuable coin that needs a top TPG holder to achieve full market value.

Thanks all, I've contacted Baldwin's in London about submitting the coin to PCGS through them. They are an authorized PCGS dealer and I've done business with them in the past so it shouldn't be a problem. Fingers crossed for a number grade but not holding my breath. Either way, I'm over the moon to have this coin in my collection. Thanks all for the advice and well wishes!

Amazing find! Miracles do happen! Quote: Definitely thought this would have a bigger reception but no matter, thanks guys! :) As you well know, we see LOTS of counterfeit coins here on the CCF. I think (me included) were waiting for the most knowledgeable experts to weigh in on this coin's authenticity before commenting. I'm overjoyed for you that this coin appears to be authentic!!
