It may not be a "details" coin but it 1): is not uncirculated and 2) has been cleaned at one time!

AU50, I think this coin won't make it any higher, probably was dipped at least once and probably a couple of times, the luster is just flat gone. Don't think it was "cleaned" per say, just dipped and over dipped, which strips the flow lines and luster off the surfaces.

I agree with yof all, loOKs harshly cleaned but I guess pcgs didn't think so!?... I also have one in an AU details-ccleaned slab. I'll post the two side by side in a comparison thread later

It's not unusual for an AU coin to be white so, unless there are identifying marks from a cleaning such as fine hairline scratches in same direction or a swirl pattern, a TPG will usually give it the benefit of the doubt.

I suspect this one is a coin that was briefly circulated, got a big banged up, and was dipped a few times to keep it white.

I read somewhere a long time ago that the 84-S dollars were released and then recalled. This may account for why there are so many AU coins and very few true "unc" coins. For the life of me I have no idea where I read about it.

The 1884-S Morgan dollar is a coin with tremendous spread in circulated grades and uncirculated. Mid AU coins are around $300 and Low end Uncirculated coins are $9K+

The price spread is because they all circulated. Plain and simple.

Well most of them, PCGS has 304 listed in their current population pages that are MS60 or better, they have certified 12 ms64, one MS65, no MS66, one MS67 and one MS68 the rest are all MS60 through MS63 and 4 are MS PL with no DMPLs certified. Say maybe half of the low end circulated are actually AU coins that is a VERY low population for a coin with a mintage of 3,200,000! .1% or so are uncirculated. They obviously were not saved back when they were new coins, and most of them that were put away were lightly circulated or cleaned causing an AU look to them over the decades.

A major condition rarity coins!
