I guess I look at this scenario a little differently than you do. I don't think it's fair to blame the guy that outbid you. If you get outbid without putting what your willing to pay, I don't see how it's anyone's fault but yours. Put in your max bid and wait. If you win it... great. If you don't, it was more than you wanted to pay anyway.

I think ebay is king strictly do to the ease of use. You can browse, buy, pay for, and receive a coin all from the comfort of your home. Local dealers are fantastic, and some will go out of their way to find something for you if they don't have it. But you still have to drive to them and look and see what they found for you, etc etc. In my opinion, it is just the easiest way to look at millions of coins and buy them. We know there are risks, but there are risks in everything that you buy. A little education, a little luck, and a little patience will get you just about anything you want online. Besides, you can't really compare local dealers per say like you can online auctions. Everyone can see the same thing you're seeing and help to give educated guesses/recommendations. Some also live in Podunkville and have a 50 minute drive to a local dealer that is respected. That's ~100 miles, and in my truck, 5 gallons of gas. That is definitely more than I would pay for shipping, and there is no trip where I didn't find what I wanted.....

I have ordered and can recommend: http://www.allensinc.com/coins/us/index.htmhttp://vtcoins.com/Both are very good, the coins that I have gotten have been great. Allens will email you a picture of a coin if you email and ask them to. Vtcoins will bend over backwards to take care of your needs. Both have gotten repeat business from me. And the best thing is they grade right, or I grade wrong. : ) I would say there's my 3 cents worth but Prethen will take it. : )

I don't particularly like ebay, but I've bought a lot of stuff on ebay and will continue to do so. I've also learned a lot. I've learned that you can get skinned and you can get really good deals. I've learned there are some dealers you can trust and some dealers that are intentionally trying to deceive somebody. I've also learned about coins by comparing between dealers on ebay.

For my knowledge, how do you buy coins from sites that doesn't give a photograph of the coin? Though it'll meet the grade one might not like the "look".

For my knowledge, how do you buy coins from sites that doesn't give a photograph of the coin? Though it'll meet the grade one might not like the "look". That is a tuff one to answer. The way I look at it is no photo, no purchase. Would you buy a house, car, boat or anything without seeing it? To me, same with anything. The problem is also, many of the photos you do see on the internet are not what you get anyway. Just one of the many reasons I like coin shows. What you see is what you get and no postage, lost in mail, bad checks, handling charges, etc. Unfortunately most people do not have access to coin shows, coin stores or even flea markets with coin dealers. So ebay gets their buisness. Also, unfortunately many on like dealers are even worse with their prices and poor coins. For those that do not have a continuous rain of coin shows, I guess ebay isn't to bad. As to on line dealers I sure wish I could find that list or post where there were many named and discussed. Now that would be a possible sticky type post where people could list, debate, tear apart, brag about on line dealers.

Before the internet there were just pricelists, no photos. Dealers like Jack Beymer still use them. The dealers I listed without photos have liberal return policies, but I listed them because I got what was described and didn't want to return it. Photos aren't worth as much as a trustworthy dealer, IMHO. It's easy to hide polishing, hairlines, scratches, corrosion, rim damage, counterfeits, etc etc. Deals on ebay generally have a guarantee that if you bought it you get to keep it. Other than for rock bottom stuff, I've generally been disappointed with coins I got there. One other dealer worth mentioning is wscoin (the link won't post). I've gotten some good coins there, passed on some I wish I had gotten (oh that 1875-cc quarter), but also have had to return a few.

thq, linky doesn't work.
I agree that a trustworthy dealer important. Its just that grade is not the only factor that you might consider when making a decision.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with Wayne Herndon ( http://www.wayneherndon.com/). He is in northern Virginia. I have bought a bunch of stuff from him. One of the Lincolns I bought from him had a borderline unreadable date (high dollar low grade coin). He had mailed me a replacement coin of the next higher grade at no extra charge before he even received the coin I was returning. For bulk modern slabs you can't beat L&C Coins in CA. Jim
