Hi all, A while back I saw a post that had quite a few dealers that members here recommended. Can anyone steer me to this post. If not how about listing some of your favorite dealers, preferably not E bay.
Thanks, Tony

Tonphil I was wondering the same thing, This site is littered with e-bay. I'm not an auction kinda guy plus I've heard way to many bad stories about people not getting their orders. Why is everyone plugging e-bay and why isn't there any mention of regular dealers?

ebay has the widest selection is why. You can find almost anything and as long as you do your research on the seller by looking at feedback and such its fine. I have had one bad experience in over 450 transactions and that was a $20 thing so no biggie.

Subject comes up a lot. There was a sort of post covering on line, not ebay, dealers somewhere. I too will not deal with ebay. Of course that is due to way to many chances on what you want you may not get and what you get you may not want. Don't know where I saw that post but many people did list their favorites and none ebay. Only ones I remember were vtcoins and millersmint, but there was considerably more mentioned and discussed.

I would venture a pretty good guess that there isn't any place in the world that more coins are bought and sold by coin collectors and dealers than ebay. That being said, I believe calling ebay "litter" is pretty harsh. If you choose to not use ebay that's just fine, but fact of the matter is that it's a huge part of the coin collecting community and needs it's fair share of attention.

Ok sorry, I will take back my "littered" comment. It just seems everyone is too quick to say e-bay instead of mentioning friendly dealers with good prices that they are happy to do buisness with. plus with a regular dealer there isn't someone who snakes you on your bid at the last second and because you might not have a fast commputer there is nothing you can do about it.

Now that I will agree with. It seems that way. Although I'm not actually convinced it's true. ebay has pretty much dominated the on-line experience and brick and mortar shops are not very prevalent these days. I do think that the members here that do have a friendly and trustworthy local or on-line dealer do talk about them more than they talk about ebay. I just think most people don't have that luxury, hence it seems the other way around. Or I could be wrong and just making all this up. What does everyone else think?

I guess I look at this scenario a little differently than you do. I don't think it's fair to blame the guy that outbid you. If you get outbid without putting what your willing to pay, I don't see how it's anyone's fault but yours. Put in your max bid and wait. If you win it... great. If you don't, it was more than you wanted to pay anyway.

I think ebay is king strictly do to the ease of use. You can browse, buy, pay for, and receive a coin all from the comfort of your home. Local dealers are fantastic, and some will go out of their way to find something for you if they don't have it. But you still have to drive to them and look and see what they found for you, etc etc. In my opinion, it is just the easiest way to look at millions of coins and buy them. We know there are risks, but there are risks in everything that you buy. A little education, a little luck, and a little patience will get you just about anything you want online. Besides, you can't really compare local dealers per say like you can online auctions. Everyone can see the same thing you're seeing and help to give educated guesses/recommendations. Some also live in Podunkville and have a 50 minute drive to a local dealer that is respected. That's ~100 miles, and in my truck, 5 gallons of gas. That is definitely more than I would pay for shipping, and there is no trip where I didn't find what I wanted.....

Enough about ebay, already. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Here are some dealers I like for quality raw US collector coins: www.harlanjberk.com www.briangreerrarecoins.com www.allensinc.com www.sedwickcoins.com (for spanish colonial cobs)

I have ordered and can recommend: http://www.allensinc.com/coins/us/index.htmhttp://vtcoins.com/Both are very good, the coins that I have gotten have been great. Allens will email you a picture of a coin if you email and ask them to. Vtcoins will bend over backwards to take care of your needs. Both have gotten repeat business from me. And the best thing is they grade right, or I grade wrong. : ) I would say there's my 3 cents worth but Prethen will take it. : )

I don't particularly like ebay, but I've bought a lot of stuff on ebay and will continue to do so. I've also learned a lot. I've learned that you can get skinned and you can get really good deals. I've learned there are some dealers you can trust and some dealers that are intentionally trying to deceive somebody. I've also learned about coins by comparing between dealers on ebay.
