I'd say pretty lucky, Fri. here it went to $3.19 per gallon. At these prices it will no doubt effect coin budgets. Everything in this country depends on transportation to get items to market and to retail store, thus everybody will be raising prices to make up for it.

Ever wonder what would happen if the US took care of itself and let the rest of the world do the same ?

Kuwait would belong to Saddam !!! and so would all of that oil and fuel !!!

Personaly I see a huge problem with our foreign policy -VS- our domestic policy !!

and it didnt start with this president !! nor will it end with his term, our fuel prices are high ,but figure how much of that cost is tax ? I guess that boston of the 1700's has been forgotten !!!

I know I'm going to catch it for this one, but I think they should bring back the 55 mph speed limit. I tried it the other day and my gas gauge hardly moved for 100 miles. Problem is, other people don't seem to care, which makes it dangerous for slow drivers like me! (which is why I say, make it mandatory for all) When you realize gas is twice as much as a year ago, (or thereabouts) that's half as much money to spend on nice coins!

My normal pace is between 55 and 60 all the time, even though here in NM Interstates are 75 miles an hour, and state highways are anywhere from 65 to 70 miles and hour,

and your right the gas mileage savings driving 55 to 60 is notable.

I certainly agree on the 55 mph, and better gas mileage.

I always drive between 55 and 60. Problem is, I get passed by everybody on the road!

I drove 120 miles round trip last week to a nearby town, and bought a coin. Drove 55. I have no doubt the savings paid for most of the cost of the coin.

Gee, I seem to remember the puking-dogs from the oil companies telling us we'd be oil independant by 1980 if they could just put this pipeline thingy though Alaska. Hey, is it 1980 yet?

That must have been a typo? Perhaps they meant to say 2080 or perhaps it was we will be independant when Americans can no longer afford to buy gas? I can tell you for a FACT that 150 to 200 mile per gallon carburators were invented and available by 1972. Guess who bought up the patent rights and threw them in a closet, where they remain today? General Motors and Ford! They accidently sold an experimental car off a car lot in Edinburg, IN in 1972 and the fellow drove it for two weeks and took it back because the gas gauge was apparently broke. They popped the hood, mouths dropped open and a call was made to GM who sent out 2 representitives the very next day demanding the return of the experimental engine (they called it). In the end, because the car had been licensed and titled, they paid off the loan and gave the fellow a new car and truck to get the experimental car back! Two other carburators were also invented in Columbus, IN by Cummins technicians who were promptly bought out by the big 3 auto manufacturers. We have been getting royally screwed for over 30 years now by corportate greed and they are all in it together.

Back around 1979 I read that Exxon had bought up 20,000 energy patents from people. It was a big joke with us. We were thinking about just making something up, a bunch of nonsensical schematics and seeing if some oil company would rush off a check without even trying to figure out if it was real. Remember cold fusion and how quickly the Department of Energy "debunked" that? Did you ever see a government agency move so fast in your life? Yea right. I'd bet the farm cold fusion is real.

You know if there was ever anything good about Stalin this situation might be it. He would have taken a few these oil company CEO's out into the courtyard, shot them, and then told their replacments to tighten up.

I don't mind being passed by everybody else on the road, I'm just afraid I'll be a victim of somebody else's road rage! I guess I'll just have to explain to them..."but, I'm saving money for coins..."

Metalman

I can't believe someone else in the former wide open spaces of the southwest actually drives as slowly as I do!

Chrystalk

I remember those stories about the fuel efficient carburetors. I suppose any inventors who would refuse to sell were in serious danger. Look at the story of the Tucker automobile if the movie was accurate...

Terry, why would G.M. or Ford care how fuel efficent their cars were? I think they would have captured the world auto market with those engines and carburators if they held the patents. Maybe Oil producers would have wanted to curtail economy and bought up patents, that would make more sense..

I know devices have been invented to improve fuel ecomomy, but with some delay, auto builders try to build what people want. They are all scrambling now for hybrids and alternative fuels cars. Americans seldom respond to crisis until their backs are against the wall. I think many of the stories are Urban legends and media myths. They pop up every time gas is in the news. Mike[:0]

These are NOT urban legends and I can tell you why Ford or GM hasn't proceeded with a fuel efficient auto. First of all one MUST understand EVERYTHING eventually comes down to about 10 men in the world. THEY own everything, including GM, Ford, Exon, Shell and ect...! We even have a vending machine company in Columbus that was owned by Standard Oil company. Get the picture. Your TV networks are also owned by the same bunch of fine folks and they determine just what you will really get to see. Its a you pat my back and I will pat yours and the only reason you have not seen any major technological changes is the very fact that they are trying to come up with a mode of transportation that will STILL require you to stop and pay every 2 to 3 hundred miles. They (the powers that be) are NOT going to give that up. Did you know a 4 wheel bicycle, with a canopy like a car, was invented a few years back that would turn 45 miles per hour with very little effort. It was also constructed in such a way to hold your "garage" temperature for up to 2 hours in any kind of climate? The big 3 auto manufacturers basically put a stop to anyone investing in that. Basically, like it or not, we are being held prisoner for every little green note you have in your pocket and there is MUCH more going on around us than most people can even begin to imagine. Hope I live long enough to see most of it exposed because it will shake the planet to its core!

Terry, as in all the posts I read that have this mysterious circle of "10 men" running it all I never see names and facts. Hundreds of books have been written about the "circle of power" It's always about this vague, "powers that be" those "folks in the shadows" blah blah blah. The reality is just s scary and right in our face! There is corruption in all levels of government and much waste, but most of all greed.

I agree that a fairly small group of people control a lot of the wealth, but I've been reading about the so called demise of America all my life. Actually, it has been written about for over 200 years! Very little has changed. The middle class is the mule in a republic, and sometimes we get tired of carrying the load. There's lots of problems in America, but I would rather live here than anywhere else on earth. Mike

P.S. How do you know they are not legends and myths? I can't prove they are myths and legends, but don't believe anyone has proven them otherwise. What bona fide proof do have have that would pass scientific scrutiny of these claims? By the way, since Gold, Silver and Platinum dictate much of the coin market, and rarities are the domain of the wealthy "they" most certainly control our hobby! You seem to forget the power of greed. That alone is enough to prevent any very small group of "greedy men" from watching each others backs....Terry has it ever occured to you to throw in a few maybe's. I think or perhaps's instead of espousing many of your opinions as facts?

At no time did I mention the demise of America! And, I had a HUGE answer all typed and ready to post but decided it would be best to wait as this is a coin forum so I will let this sleeping dog lie for now!
