Okay guys and gals - this one pretty well wraps it up for me. These are the last of my Carson City Morgans - not a complete set yet - still missing the 1885CC and the 1889CC, but someday.....

The 1882 V&T receipt is for a month of lumber loading.

Worn from use doubleeagle....

Imagine auditor Laughton of the V&T paying out 133 of those double eagles for that 1882 loading bill. The V&T Carson City office is right across the street from the mint. The whole set-up - from the freight agent Tobey to the Tahoe lumber mill owner Bliss (Tobey's brother-in-law) to his partner in the V&T Yerington (and his 4 sons - the Cartwrights personified) - is pretty cozy....their signatures and names are all over that piece of paper...

I have to wonder whether this little nest of robber barons was part of the reason they closed the mint. It was hard to control what was going on in the Ponderosa from Washington DC.

Most 1878-CC's are F-EF from heavy use, so you may be right, thq. It probably saw use at the V&T. They circulated heavily in NV and especially CA, where paper money other than National Gold Bank Notes was illegal at the time. This one circulated heavily in that area until I suspect it was bagged up and then sent to Europe in a gold export before the 1895 gold crisis.
I also suspect this one is a Paul Wittlin repatriate. Wittlin scoured European banks for DE's, especially CC's and rare Saints. It's worn but a nice coin...and it's a CC!

Number 12 of 19.
