VF-35 details. Unfortunately there is a really big rim bump right in front of Liberty's chin. When looking at beat up coins (I collect large cents I do that a lot) the location of hits and rim bumps is very important to the price of a coin. You want to avoid coins with big hits or rim bumps in what is called the "focal area". Basically the focal area is where your eye is drawn to first.   These two illustrations show the focal area of a Morgan. On or right in front of Liberty's face for the obverse. Inside the wreath for the reverse. Hits in the focal area really kill the value of a coin so be wary when buying problem coins. A hit on Liberty's face is worse than the same hit on one of the stars. I've gotten pretty good at spotting problem coins, especially Morgans with as any obvious problems such as this one, and pricing them accordingly. For the price of this one, I think anyone would have snatched it up.

Strictly based upon the degree of wear, I think it makes XF with a "details' annotation for the deformations to the rim.

It looked quite a bit more cruddy when I got it. I gave it a quick dip in some acetone to knock off some of the gunk and those colors were underneath. I'm still undecided on whether I like the color on this circulated coin.
@cascade, I paid less than that.

Yeah, I've got another spitting eagle PCGS AU-55. I like that they are easily identifiable even in lower grades.
Dave, what grade and value would you put on it?

I have this one at VF30 details, rim damage. A good rule of thumb for placing approx. value on details (problem) coins is start at about 50% of FMV and adjust up or down depending on eye appeal, etc. Here is a pricing sample from Numismedia: http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml |

Tpmjr2004, I figured you'd have the attribution already - you arrived here a VAMmer and didn't know it. Almost certainly a Details coin but those details make a strong argument for XF in my opinion. Almost no visible wear on the wings, and they wear on both sides at once. No premium for the variety, until you frame it as a "lowball" for the VAM in the context of creating a Grading Set of it. There are a few high-level VAMmers with discretionary income who see grading sets as a very cool goal, and I think VAM-3 might be a good candidate for such a goal. You should be able to identify that dot into pretty low grade. |

I try to VAM when I can, but some of them are definitely more difficult to figure out than others. This one, however, was very easy. I've lucked into a few Top 100 Morgans, but not many. I managed to find this Carson City in my dealer's cull bin. I don't know how it ended up there, but I was pretty excited to see it. As I was going through the tray, I flipped it to check the mintmark and got confused for a second as I didn't expect to see two letters staring back at me. I had to do a double take to make sure everything else checked out on it. The guy that was working with me glanced through my pile while I continued to look through the tray. He made a comment about the AG '03-S I found (just mentioning too bad it wasn't a Micro S), but didn't say anything when he picked up the CC. It was a nice pick up for $19. |
