Check out place on line like Wizard coin supply for Albums. Coin Express too has some really decent prices. Don't forget that there are numerous manufacturers of Albums. As to Mercury dimes. They are a lot more common than people realize. Many Coin stores throw them in junk piles and some are really OK. Also, check out flea markets and garage/yard sales. Not long ago I was able to pick up thousands of them at a flea market but that seller sort of vanished. To bad too since most were less than a dollar each.

You probably wouldn't be able to get all the common dates in the junk silver bins, but you might be able to find the rest on ebay. *Personally, any LCS that had nothing but an overpriced inventory and wouldn't even let me cherrypick their junk silver, just lost a customer.

I was really surprised by the variety of date/mm and majority appeared to be in better condition than expected (especially BC he just pulled them out quick)- I had asked for 10 merc and 10 rose and ended up 11/9 with the mercs being in better condition overall. A 1920 and 1920 d (I believe) were worst condition wise where the 0 was partially faded/worn. I'll try to add some pics if I get some quiet time this weekend.
Buying a complete or partial set in dansco might work, but the fun is putting it together. The other option is cheap Whitman folder ($3-4) and keeps them organized for now and then the $20-25 savings on nicer album just add to stash until I see if I can get them for decent price before committing to album

Personally I wouldn't do business with a store that gave me an attitude when I wanted to select my own coins Certainly I've walked away from tables at coin shows and they have lost business from me if they act all pissy

I'm a dealer and except for the "big three", you could probably buy all the others for a buck or two; in grades of AG to VG ( and a bit higher as the dates go up. Fine to VF for the thirties, VF to XF in the 40's. I have in fact had several customers do just that. Though it was easier during the 'Great melt" years of a couple years past. I have one customer that comes in once a week to check the junk bin for upgrades, and now has a set that averages VF30. It has taken him 5 years, but I think the search is part of the fun. Enjoy, and give it a shot!

I'm just getting into collecting mercs. I'm targeting the 42 pre-1934 issues (though I'll likely skip the big '16D), and looking for estate sales, LCS inventory, and other places. Just starting out and I am pretty excited about this series. @g048406: I really can't believe that could be true. All issues in series except 1916-D in avg grade in a Dansco for $200 on ebay?! That sounds like a steal. Please let me know if you see that on ebay!

I've noticed some ebay lots over past couple of weeks that are below the 15/16+ to 1 junk price (current ebay going rate?). The lots usually have high # and come in older folders with pictures that are tough to see. I'm not opposed to larger lots, but I landed 2 dansco (1 just mercs other mercs through 1978) and 1 Whitman album merc for $24 including shipping earlier this week (thank you if it was a CCF member) The plan might be just keep 1 dansco and sell/trade other 2 or start one set from junk and another higher grade.

Thank you for the link. I have tried Wizard for the Merc Album and am still waiting for them to get them in for over 2 months. I might have to forgo the ANA discount I get and get one here for the wife. She has fallen in love with them.

I am currently working on a merc set. They are IMO, one of the few coins that can still look good even when they are almost worn slick. They are very popular and very fun, and it helps that they are readily available in circulated condition and most shops should have a large amount of dimes for you to look through. I would strongly suggest going for the best grades that you can. Many of the dates in the 1940s are available in uncirculated condition for less than $15 each. For example, this lovely lady only cost me $7...

I would agree, Merc's even look good even in AG-03...just as long as they aren't cleaned. I saw a bad cleaning job on some of them at my LCS the other day. Sad, sad...

I believe their shipping rate is $6, but, you can order as many albums as you want with no additional shipping fees. If you order more than $100, you get a 10% discount. When I had ordered (15) used Indian cent Library of Coins albums, half of them were brand new as he only had a few used albums. Their used albums were in great shape anyway.
