Mushy looking, reverse rim, date, color and tone matches many of the Chinese counterfeits I have seen. Have you weighed the coin or done a magnet test?

I was on my way to VAMworld until I read further. The mint mark threw an immediate flag for me.

I suppose I can see both views; one part of me asks "why counterfeit a common-date Morgan?" while the other says "because if you counterfeit CC dollars & 1893's they're more likely to be very closely scrutinized." The mint mark and date drew my attention on first glance, and the funky reverse rim. It looks toned similar to the fake Trade dollars that infest ebay 24/7. Right away it was pretty obvious a fake, I'm talking the first second of seeing it, literally... SD is correct as this coin is a good lipmus test for those just broaching morgans. Just enough to confuse the novice but an immediate scream to the initiated!

Just wanted to see if anyone would grade (newbies to Morgans), guess I did let it out too early LOL, at the same time that MM definitely gives it away and the rims. Thanks all. Jeff

Jeff, I looked at this coin yesterday when there were no posts. I did not know if you were a seller or a buyer, so I never posted. My comments would have been as follows: The coin does not look natural. It looks as it been cleaned and the dirt added to cover the cleaning. If I was a buyer, I would not buy this coin. I saw the high O mint and checked VAM World and there is a high O mint VAM for the 1885 O, so I never picked up that the coin was fake. I am please that I knew something was wrong, but a little disappointed that I did not know the coin was counterfeit. |

Just wait until you start getting into vams. It's like having to relearn morgans all over again. Like graduating high school and entering college. Which is part of the VAM appeal |
