SWL
This is a picture of a certified SWL for comparison

I wouldn't be so sure on the SWL. The bottom line goes quite far left on the OP picture. Although the clearly visible part of the bottom line is indeed the shortest, if you look closely you see some faint continuation left. ICCS is quite strict on SWL coins. It would be interesting to send it in.

Just an FYI. Here is the reference to SWL in Charlton which is incorrect.

Yeah, Charlton's seems off by a couple of lines. Isn't the SWL 2 lines not touching canoe (looks like 1-1/2 ARN but longer). ARN is 1-1/2 lines...

Ok I meant to reply again to this topic before but I was waiting for another dollar to come in the mail. The following are all 51's. The first picture I have is what I currently have in my Whitman book as a FWL variety:

This second picture I have the ARN variety slot:

This one I have in the SWL variety spot:

And this is one that I just bought that is an ICCS certified SWL variety.

From what I can tell the pictures of the ARN and the certified SWL are very similar, except the SWL has an extra water line at the bottom whereas the ARN looks like its just a dot where the water line should be. The one I have in the SWL has no lines touching the canoe which I thought was the only criterion for the SWL variety. So out of these 4 pictures do I have an example of all 3 varieties or just 2 varieties?

2nd looks pretty much like the 4th, so maybe 2 arn's

Here is a 51 that ICCS would NOT attribute as SWL.

I think that when there is a break in the line but it picks up again just at the boat by only a little bit, it's FWL. I just returned a coin to a seller on ebay who listed it as a SWL. The SWL lines just end.

Okay so I think I can tell what a SWL dollar is now, although I still kind of think that last picture thecoinhunter posted should technically be one although I agree ICCS wouldn't grade it as such. What would be the difference between a true SWL and an ARN variety then?

My understanding. 3 Lines all progressively shorter is SWL. 1.5 lines for ARN (as shown in the second pic above).

This came back from ICCS in the 90's as an Arnprior 51..

There is a noticeable die crack following up through the front of the canoe..on this example.

.....and a similar long die crack flowing up and down through the rear of the canoe.

That's very interesting about the die crack. Does this imply that the dies cracks are imperative on the 51 arn variety ?

I was hoping that the dollar experts here..would be able to answer that question..

"My guess" is that's it's an important "marker" for that very tough variety..especially when trying to find one in high grade..

But possibly as in the 55 Arn, you can have with die crack & without.
