I agree with Machine Doubling as it has that shelf or ledge in the doubling. IMO

SPP, I wasn't ready to go that far, but the rim does have an odd line all the way around, in both obv and rev photos.

Chinese-made counterfeit.
The second L in DOLLAR gives it away.

Thanks for editing DBM. I think when people say "counterfeit" they need to say why. Seller seems reputable. One of their other listings, 1938 dollar, has the same mushy appearance and is ICCS, so some of this may be just the photos.

Overall mushy appearance. The numbers in the date are mis-shapen and jagged rather than round.

It's a known counterfeit variety. The L is one clear marker as is a chip above the front paddler (as I recall).

obvious fake, hard to tell from the pics but it looks like the obverse initials are HD.

Not even one of the better counterfeits.
The "EH" is missing below the rear of the canoe.
I have shown this before, but compare to known counterfeit.

The counterfeits are getting better. I recently had someone bring in some Carson city Morgans that were very close to weight and looked great and were non magnetic. The slide magnet test proved no silver content as they were indeed fake. I believe this version of the 48 is significantly lighter at around 19 grams so I'm a bit surprised that it wasn't caught. That's enough difference to feel in hand even without looking at detail. Anyone can be fooled, more than the average amount of due diligence should be done when buying coins at that price. People who sell these depend on you having stars and dollar signs of profit in your eyes. The price it just expensive enough so it looks legit but cheap enough to look like a deal.

The EH below the canoe! Sheesh, I must be blind. Move this to the counterfeit variety forum.

Seller removed the item. I'll let them know not to waste their money on ICCS. Hope they get their $800 back.
