I was way high on the last one so I 'll say AU58. Buffaloes are tricky.

Lol, yes they are edweather! Don't let the last one play mind games on you. I know it's easier said than done though.

I see what looks like a slight gray-ish color above the Indian's hair knot and on his cheekbone, and on the Buffalo's upper front leg. Those areas also look a bit flat which I think is a common strike feature. If those gray areas have luster loss from friction the coin should grade AU-58. However, the coin otherwise looks lustrous with very few contact marks. The 1938-D is common in MS-66 grade and that's where I'd put this one, assuming it makes the Mint State cut.

There's a reason why the 1938-D is a popular type coin: generally well-struck, lustrous, readily available, and inexpensive even in high grade.

As long as it comes back MS which I think it should, I see this at an absolute minimum of MS-65.

I could see this being an MS-65.

MS-64+ (not like a at the end of the grade, but that it could grade higher)

NGC called it MS66! It's hard to tell from the photos, but this one is super lustrous!

Way to go! Now use your touch on, say, a '25-S!

I felt like it was a solid 65 with a shot to go higher. That's the reason I sent it in to NGC. I wouldn't have if I thought is was 64.

I think 66 is gracious but definitely not unrealistic. You are correct though, I should be happy and I am! ;)

I don't see any distracting (or any really) marks on the coin, and no wear at all. I was crazy to call it MS-64!

Had a feeling this might go higher - the fields had a 66 look in the photos but really hard to tell overall luster without the coin in hand.

No problem at all with the grade. Very few marks on that coin. Nice pick up!
