1946 Iowa Centennial Half Dollar

Nice piece for sure. The Old Capital building on the reverse still stands on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, Iowa. It's dome is covered in pure gold leaf.

"State Treasurer John M. Grimes said today there was a net of $197,535 in the centennial coin fund. A total of 99,000 of the 100,000 centennial half dollars were sold. Of the remaining 1,000, 500 were set aside for sale 50 years hence and the other 500 for sale 100 years hence."

I was born in Wisconsin and have this piece in my collection:

This is the one I'm going to buy for myself as a gift when I finish my dissertation and leave Iowa City. That way I can look at the Old Capitol no matter where I live.

I was born in West Bend Iowa and grew up in Rolfe, Ia and I have one my mother gave me when she passed away. I also started coin collecting when I had my paper route there back when silver coins and Buffalos were common
