It doesn't post the question for all members to see, just the seller. For the curious, he did respond to me. Pretty much sums it up unfortunately. Buyer beware I guess.

Sorry, but I'm not 100% sure that these coins are original. Unfortunately, I am not an expert and I can not define is it a copy or an original. I've bought these coins in a large job lot with much more norwegian and scandinavian coins. I've spent about 5000 USD, it's less than the market price, so probably some coins are copies.
Yes, sure, I will make a refund in that case.

Quote:It is my personal experience that ebay does not care if their listings are fake or real.. Guess you haven't been paying much attention around here the last three months. Quote: for the past several months sell counterfeit after counterfeit Show me a coin he's selling that's counterfeit and tell me why. I looked at the several listings he got negs for and nothing screams at me, but I'm certainly no expert on Norwegian coins.

If you go to a coin show and see a dealer selling counterfeits do you confront him on the spot, report him to the bourse chairman, or just pass him by and move on? You can do the same thing with ebay. The Internet is still a Wild West show where "buyer beware" rules. Do your homework and report the listings as counterfeit. Let ebay deal with it. Let them decide whether to confront the seller and pull the listings.

Quote: See his current listings all have that same washed out look. Laughable counterfeits. Which can make him a lousy photographer. Plus the coins are in capsules. "Washed out look" does not translate to "laughable" in my book. I need more to report him to my guy, I can't just say "They look washed out," sorry.

Don't worry I reported all of his listings earlier. This seller is a joke and I have 100 per cent confidence that these are counterfeits he is listing. We had dealings with similar Norwegian coins about three years ago and .....surprise they pretty much looked the same. Once you have seen a few that are real these are truly quite laughable. I will stake my 40 plus years as a professional numismatist that those 24 skillings are straight out of China and not Oslo.

These aren't Chinese counterfeits. They have a distinct appearance and crudeness that is consistent among Eastern European counterfeits. This is also a common tactic of mixing cheap, circulated genuine coins with fakes of more expensive ones.
Bobby... if you need a distinctive, objective reason - these coins have problems with the depth of details/relief. Like, dips in the design details go much too deep or are far too wide. Compare to a genuine example and the difference stands out immediately. Very common sign of transferred designs on fakes from this region.

bobby131313 : what's new here, did things changed ? As you may be aware, I'm running a facebook group dedicated to fake spanish & latin-america coins (contemporary counterfeits, but also crap from sellers) - we have stopped reporting anything as it was worthless. How shall documented reports be made now ? (the group is here : https://www.facebook.com/groups/monedafalsa )

I have had an inside contact for many months that for the moment I cannot share. I spent over half a day with an ebay exec in January and explained the problem with the CCW going away. We are working hard together to get something back in place for public reporting but its a slow process. Just FYI, the coin and stamp category managers had no idea the dropping of the CCW was coming. They were not even consulted on the matter. They were completely blindsided.

Thanks A LOT for working on this with them (and confirming nothing was prepared there . that's just another odd move in a very small part of a big corporation). I understand the "buyer beware" rule, but there still has to be something in order to avoid scams (I remember last year, after many notices we couldn't stop a Mexican seller for listing coins from the Millenia collection, and having peoples bidding on them . all the auctions did end with high biddings). I hope Robert is involved in the process / discussion :)
The sticky on my group still says to report using "report an item", -> prohibited / restricted -> stamps & currencies & coins -> replica I'll leave it that way, I suppose it's the best way for now (I've removed the ccw link since it was dismantled).

From my personal experience, auction houses don't care. I've seen a number of counterfeits reach the market in recent years.. each time, I've informed auction houses and dealers of the issue. Every time its the same response.. report them to the police and let the police sort it.

Auction houses ? We have had no issues having Sack, Heritage, Aureo, Cayon, Vico react to reported fakes . There was once a long discussions, the coin stayed there as there were doubts (and well, on a slab with bids, it's hard to have it removed just like that .)
