What exactly is the damage? Do they think it's an AT coin, or am I missing something else such as cleaning or marks?

First time viewing I was going to say AU maybe details, before seeing you posted the results. I see a tiny bit of scuffing around the braid, maybe detailed due to AT to try and hide that fact? None the less it's a real lustrous beautiful coin, I'd be happy to have one like that in my collection.

Got in hand today - holder says the damage is "SMOOTHED"

what is up with that? What does that mean?

Normally this means that an effort was made to buff away or erase some type of damage or contact mark(s).
